New Coffee Shop in the Works for Del Ray

Seva Cafe on Mount Vernon Avenue will serve Swing's Coffee, espresso, tea, salads and smoothies.

There’s little doubt that Del Ray runs on coffee, but can it support another coffee shop?

Dan Bender and Sara VanderGoot, co-owners of Del Ray’s Vital Body and Mind Therapies, have submitted a permit application to transform the former Mind and Media office located at 2016 Mount Vernon Ave. into Seva Cafe.

According to a sample menu filed with the application, Seva Cafe will offer coffee, espresso, tea, salads and smoothies.

Like nearby hangout St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub, the new cafe will have no cooking. The building is not outfitted with a hood or other kitchen equipment.

The coffee at the new café will come from nearby Swing’s Coffee, according to the application

Seva Café will offer pour-overs, espresso drinks and cold-brew coffee from Swing’s. The coffee company offers similar selections at the on-site bar at its E. Monroe Avenue roastery.

The Mount Vernon Avenue space became available when Mind and Media moved to Old Town in June.

A floor plan for Seva Cafe includes table and counter seating as well as a playroom with sofas.

The proposed hours of business at Seva Cafe are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The application for the cafe is pending administrative approval.

Another coffee spot is looking to open in Del Ray in the near future: Emma’s Coffee Shop and Wine Bar on Hume Avenue is now aiming for an early 2014 opening.

Bender did not return a request for comment left Wednesday afternoon.
