Chinquapin Park Rec Center Closing Delayed

The facility was originally slated to shut down for facility improvements on Monday, May 6.

Alexandria parks officials have delayed the closing date for Chinquapin Park Recreation Center by more than a month.

The facility, located next the T.C. Williams High School on King Street, was originally scheduled to close May 6 for repairs and improvements, a staff member said. The center will now close for day-to-day operations on June 17 and should reopen in the fall.

Staff members are trying to lessen the closure’s inconvience to community members, city officials said in a news release, but said the scope of the facility improvements requires full closure to ensure public safety, reduce costs and shorten the construction period.

Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will operate on the following schedule:

  • May 6 through May 26, normal operating hours. This includes:

    • 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday

  • 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday

  • 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday:  

    • May 27: closed for Memorial Day

    • May 28 through June 16, restricted hours. This includes:

      • 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday

      • 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday

      • 8 a.m. to noon Saturday

  • Closed Sunday

  • The city has relocated many of Chinquapin’s programs:

    • All camps normally scheduled for the summer will operate at Francis C. Hammond Middle School.

    • All “land” classes normally scheduled for the summer will operate at other Department facilities. Visit this webpage for class listings.

    • Swim lessons normally scheduled at Chinquapin will operate at the outdoor pools.

  • All valid Chinquapin Fitness Passes will be honored at all city fitness facilities.

  • All valid Chinquapin Aquatic Passes will be honored at all city outdoor pools.

  • All outdoor pools will operate extended hours to accommodate swim lessons and lap swimming (weather permitting).

  • Additional aquatic programs will operate at Chinquapin through June 16.

  • Regular summer swim lessons will continue at the Old Town and Charles Houston Memorial pools. Learn about individual pool schedules of events and lane availability

    In March, Alexandria City Council authorized that the polling station at Chinquapin be moved a half-mile down King Street to the First Baptist Church for the June 11 primary and Nov. 5 general election because of the closure.

    The polling place will be located on the north side of the church in Rooms 150C and 150D.
