Commonwealth's Attorney Sengel to Retire

Commonwealth’s Attorney S. Randolph “Randy” Sengel announced Tuesday that he is retiring from his post at the end of his current term, which ends in December 2013.

“I will not seek re-election in 2013 as I intend to retire from office when my current term ends,” Sengel said in a statement. “Service in this office is always a collaborative effort. I am honored to serve with a skilled, dedicated and professional staff of assistant prosecutors and support personnel. We have worked very hard to establish the highest standards of efficiency, fairness and accountability in the prosecution of criminal cases. I am certain that the office has a great depth of talent and experience which will sustain these efforts.”

Sengel has served as a prosecutor in Alexandria for more than three decades. He was first elected Commonwealth’s Attorney in 1997.

The Commonwealth's Attorney is a constitutional officer elected by Alexandria citizens to a four-year term. The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of persons charged with the commission of criminal and traffic offenses that occur within city limits in violation of state law or city ordinances.

Sengel serves as the chief prosecutor dealing with homicide cases and cases dealing with crimes against the administration of justice, among others. He also serves as legal advisor to the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office and Alexandria Police Department with regard to criminal matters.
