2013 Alexandria Turkey Trot: Registration Filling Up, Volunteers Needed

Racecourse receives some changes in response to runner safety concerns.

Registration is nearly full for the 38th annual Alexandria Turkey Trot, which will run Thanksgiving morning through the streets of Del Ray and Rosemont.

Interested participants are urged to sign up online prior to the race to ensure a spot.

The Del Ray Business Association is seeking volunteers to assist in race preparation efforts. If you’re interested in lending a hand, you can sign up through the Turkey Trot website.

Race officials have made some changes to this year’s course in response to police recommendations.

“The adjustments we made to this year's route were a direct response to the police department's concerns about runner safety, and to clear the streets in a quicker and in a more orderly fashion,” said John Reynolds, race coordinator with the DRBA. “This required us to remove some of the trickier turns and bring the finish behind the school, all while maintaining the required 5-mile distance for competitive course certification.”

The changes include:

  • The route cuts across E. Uhler Avenue on the way out instead of around the Hume corner, keeping that entire intersection open for the duration of the race
  • The route will turn onto Linden Street from Russell Road instead of going down to Cedar Street
  • The return leg comes down E. Oxford Avenue instead of the zigzagging Monroe, Newton, Cliff and Bellefonte

A map of the new course is available on the event website.

Reynolds said a flyer is going out to all houses and businesses on the route, as well as other houses within a given proximity to the race with specifics about times and parking.

If residents park inside the race route on a non-restricted street and want to avoid any delays during the race, they’re asked to park their vehicles outside of the race route prior to 8:30 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.

Parking restrictions include:

  • Mount Vernon Avenue from Braddock Road to Adams Street, both sides from 7 a.m. to noon.
  • E. Uhler Avenue between Mount Vernon and Commonwealth avenues—north side of the street only—from 7 a.m. to noon.
  • Russell Road from Chapman Street to Linden Street, both sides from 7 a.m. to noon.
