• Mark Herring for Attorney GeneralNeighbor

 • Annandale, VA

Mark Herring serves in the Virginia State Senate, where he has worked hard to protect Virginia’s families by putting aside political posturing and instead focusing on finding solutions to the challenges families face each day.

Mark was elected to the State Senate In 2006. During his tenure, he has worked to bring technology-based economic development to the Northern Virginia region, secured transportation funding for needed overpasses and other local road projects, and has been a leader in making both state and local governments more accountable to the citizens of Virginia.

To protect our kids, he led the effort to crack down on new threats to their safety, working closely with law enforcement and prosecutors to keep dangerous new synthetic drugs off the shelves. He has championed legislation to target those who would commit financial scams against our seniors and as a member of the Governor McDonnell’s Domestic Violence and Response Advisory Board, he sponsored and passed legislation to strengthen penalties for acts of domestic violence. He serves on the Senate General Laws and Technology, Commerce and Labor, Local Government and Rehabilitation and Social Services Committees.

Mark believes that when we can, we should put aside our differences to move the Commonwealth forward. But in the face of extremism, it’s important to stand firm for Virginia’s values. He has strongly opposed efforts to take away a woman’s right to choose, roll back voting rights, and institutionalize discrimination in our laws.

Mark has lived most of his life in Loudoun County, Virginia. After graduating with honors from the University of Richmond School of Law, he established a successful law practice in Leesburg. He is the Principal of the law firm Herring & Turner, P.C., working in the areas of business and corporate matters, land use and zoning, civil litigation, and municipal law.

In 1999, he was elected to the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, representing the Leesburg District. As a member of the Board, he served as Chairman of the Land Use Committee and developed a record as a strong advocate for economic development and road improvements that create jobs and transportation solutions for citizens.

As a community leader, Mark is a recent past chair for the United Way campaign in Loudoun County. Mark is a member of the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce, Leesburg Kiwanis Club, Keep Loudoun Beautiful, Loudoun County Bar Association, NAACP – Loudoun Chapter, Olive Branch Lodge #114 and Alexandria Scottish Rite.

Mark and his wife, Laura, have been married for 23 years. They have two children, Peyton and Tim, ages 19 and 16. They are members of the Leesburg Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his law degree, Mark holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Virginia in economics and foreign affairs.
