ReplyThe tricky part is spacing the stations out properly. I think they will have to be a little further apart than they are in Old Town. Here are my picks:
* Just north of GW on MVA
* YMCA
* Commonwealth and Monroe
* Mount Vernon Rec Center
* Mount Vernon and Del Ray (Maybe in front of Bean Creative? There is not a lot of unused street space in the area and the farmer's market is already overloaded)
* Cora Kelly

The idea if being able to get food from next door makes a lot of sense. That would solve a lot of problems and should get the whiners on this thread to pipe down.

Somehow I suspect that they will accept a well-behaved teenager. I doubt they will be checking IDs at the door. The policy would just give them a way to kick out customers who do not exhibit proper etiquette.

ReplyWhat about the building by the Hyundai dealership that currently has a dress shop? That property has been mostly vacant for at least five years. You can't honestly say there is "no" space available.

ReplyI'm more worried about the assessments than the tax rate. My house appraised for 15% less than the assessment. Now I have to go through the appeals process to keep from getting gouged. I can't wait.

ReplyI don't mind the tax rate. The assessments are a way bigger deal. My house was assessed for about 15% more than what it is appraised at. (It isn't just me; the house next door is listed at 10% under its assessment and has not sold yet.) Now I have to go through an appeal just to keep from getting gouged.

@JK
Removing parking spaces was discussed at a recent transportation meeting and the consensus was that if you removed the space directly before each intersection on MVA it would achieve the desired effect - improve sightlines without unduly impacting businesses. We agreed that bicycle parking would be a good use of that space. Another option that wasn't mentioned at the meeting that could work in places is bikeshare stations. -

ReplyThis question is too binary for me. As for traffic calming, the bottom line is that I feel like I am playing Frogger when I try to cross MVA around the farmer's market in the afternoon. I propose a priority crosswalk (like on Braddock Rd. by the Metro station) midway between each pair of lights on MVA between Monroe and Commonwealth and another on Monroe itself in front of the YMCA. Maybe a sign with a cinder block base in the middle of the street would be enough to make a big difference. Can I take up a collection?
Transit in Del Ray is a mess. The 10 buses drive me crazy. The route is highly susceptible to clumping (I once saw a 10A, 10B, and 10E back-to-back-to-back) so your wait times are unpredictable. The AT10 line has a fundamental flaw that I don't think the trolley would fix. I don't want to go to King St. Metro. I want to go into Old Town itself.
What I think Alexandria needs is the equivalent of a Circulator line in DC that connects Del Ray, Slaters, Potomac Yard, and Old Town. I don't care if it is a bus, trolley, or rickshaw. I'm just not sure how to get there from here especially with the transitway being built on Rt. 1.

I want the NTSB to demonstrate that lowering the limit will actually reduce collisions before criminalizing having two drinks at dinner. "Because MADD said so" is not a good enough reason.
