Week in Review: GenOn, Debates and a Turn Lane

A look back at the week that was.

On Monday this week, GenOn’s Potomac River Generating Station in North Old Town was retired. Elected officials from Alexandria, Richmond and Capitol Hill lauded the closure of the coal-fired power plant. “Today is a great day,” said Mayor Bill Euille, calling the closure of the plant, which opened in 1949, “a community success” and a good example of how citizens and the city can work together. Also on Monday, U.S. Senate candidate George Allen (R) made a stop in town for an economic roundtable discussion with Alexandria business owners. On Tuesday evening, Euille and challenger Andrew Macdonald met in their first debate ahead of November’s election. The two candidates sparred on issues of development, density, affordable housing, …
