New School Board Includes Six First-Time Members

Vice Chairman Helen Morris ousted from District A.

Six first-time members were elected to Alexandria School Board on Tuesday in an election that saw current Vice Chairman Helen Morris ousted from District A. District A candidate Stephanie Kapsis, a former department director at Teach For America and elementary school teacher at P.S. 1 in Brooklyn, N.Y., earned the most votes (11,261, 24.56 percent) of any candidate in any of the city’s three geographic districts. “I am incredibly honored to receive the support of the Alexandria community,” Kapsis, a first-time candidate, wrote in an email to supporters late Tuesday night. The final results were not available until early Wednesday morning because of a delay.   Karen Graf (20.36 percent) and Bill Campbell (18.02 percent) were also elected …

Good idea Edmund on having them visit. However, in cases like District B, some Patrick Henry constituents voted in the District B school board, but District C actually includes PH (unless my map-reading skills have fallen by the wayside) and the area immediately surrounding it. I know the school board is intended to represent all of ACPS, but would be nice to at least have a say in who is …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Helen Morris for School Board

Mark C. Williams endorses Helen Morris for in District A.

To the Editors: I write to endorse the candidacy for re-election of Helen Morris for School Board District A. Helen is an exceptionally capable and committed School Board member who has aggressively addressed the achievement-gap and school-capacity issues that are of central importance to every ACPS family. Helen has also been at the forefront of the essential effort to dramatically improve the Jefferson-Houston elementary school—historically the least academically strong school in the ACPS system.  Helen’s work on School Board is characterized by a remarkable level of personal involvement. Helen sends her child to Jefferson-Houston, and Helen plays an active role in the school’s reorganization, in the planned new school building, and in …

To put Superintendent Sherman's salary into perspective: He receives the same compensation as the New York City School Chancellor. To put that simply: the man who runs a school system with approximaely 10,000 students is paid the same as the person who runs a system with more than 1,000,000. http://gothamschools.org/2009/01/06/new-database-reveals-that-doe-employs-the-citys-top-earner/   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Kapsis and Morris for School Board in District A

Former Alexandria School Board member Scott Newsham offers his District A endorsements.

To the Editor: The next Alexandria City School Board has its work cut out as they try to restore credibility to the body and demonstrate that an elected board can provide Alexandria with effective public education leadership. They will need to focus on the three primary functions of a school board: (1) setting policy and goals; (2) adopting a budget that reflects the needs of the school system with consideration given to all public business before the City; and (3) ensuring the superintendent meets their expectations in administering the schools. I attended the candidate forums at Mount Vernon Community School and George Washington Middle School, read the information provided on the candidates' websites and their responses to other surveys…

Yes I do, Linda. I'm not feeling sure enough in my gut about the other candidates. As a teacher, I try to read between the lines of their campaign literature and questionnaire answers to find the real agenda - the others leave me a little wary.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Yianilos on District B School Board Race

Former District B School Board candidate Chris Yianilos offers his endorsements in the race.

To the editor, Earlier this year I was proud to be a candidate for Alexandria City School Board for District B. Regretfully, over this past summer, I was forced to withdraw my candidacy due to a series of serious, adverse health events experienced by my family.  Since I withdrew my candidacy, many neighbors, friends and fellow citizens have asked me who of my former colleagues running for election I would support in this election. I consider myself fortunate to have had the unique opportunity of communicating and getting to know, to varying degrees, nearly all of the candidates for school board in District B. We are fortunate to have five dedicated individuals stepping forward to fill a critical role. Yet, on election day, you can only …

Keep in mind the track record of current leadership within ACPS when voting for School Board candidates on Tuesday. One of the duties of our school board members is to represent Alexandria City Public Schools before the Virginia Board of Education. Letter to the Editor: An Endorsement for Karen Graf

Lisa Guernsey Krupicka, Rob Krupicka, Dan Solomon and Laura Dove put their support behind District A School Board candidate Karen Graf.

To the editor, To our Alexandria friends in District A, there's an excellent slate of candidates for School Board in the Nov. 6 election. We are fortunate to have such a wealth of choices in our district. You can vote for up to three. We encourage everyone to learn more about the candidates. One good resource is now online: the candidates submitted written responses to the questions from the Del Ray Citizens Association debate. Their responses were published and voted on by a group of 15 Alexandria residents.  But to add to that, we encourage you to vote for Karen Graf. We support Karen Graf for School Board for Alexandria's District A. Here's why: Karen looks out for all of Alexandria's kids. We've witnessed Karen's focus and perseverance…

Letter to the Editor: School Board Endorsements for Districts A and B

A group of Alexandria citizens offer their endorsements in two school board districts based on the candidates' survey responses.

Dear Editor, We are a group of citizens committed to a vibrant City of Alexandria, who believe strongly that excellent schools are vital to our community. We have joined together to endorse the following candidates in the upcoming election for School Board elections to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6. No endorsements were made in District C because there is not a competitive election in that district. These endorsed represent a slate of individuals who, in their answers to a detailed survey, demonstrated both a broad understanding of our school’s operations and a strong knowledge of the issues. They articulated a strong commitment to improving educational outcomes for Alexandria’s students, better communications with stakeholders and for fiscal…

Booz and Lewis have better (not "slick") campaigns because both they hired a professional campaign manager. I don't think the other candidates did that. I like a candidate who takes things seriously. I'm tired of the school board being run by a bunch of unprofessional do nothings. Booz and Lewis have also each worked on a number of campaigns in one capacity or another, so what you call "slick" or…   more ›

Since the Schools get about 82% of their operating budget from the City, I think Patch unfortunately failed to address the issue of the relationship between the School Board and City Council. School Board members/candidates can talk all they want about how to improve school quality, but they get their money from the City; they have no taxing authority. Considering the Vice Mayor called for the …   more ›

I DO live in District C and am generally satisfied with the slate of School Board candidates in my District. At least two of the candidates have served on the Alexandria School Board previously/currently serve, have PTA leadership experience, and have/had children in ACPS; the other candidate does/has not. It is for this reason that I wish Jeff Zack had not dropped out, but the third candidate …   more ›
