General Services Administration names Dorothy Robyn to oversee the federal government's real estate portfolio.
The General Services Administration has named the Defense Department official who oversaw the Defense Base Closure and Realignment, or BRAC, process as its new head of public buildings. The Capital Business Blog reports the GSA on Tuesday named Dorothy Robyn, who was the Pentagon’s deputy undersecretary for installations and environment, as the new commissioner of its Public Buildings Service. In her new position, Robyn will oversee the federal government’s real estate portfolio. Robyn “closed out the most recent round of controversial BRAC process,” Jonathan O’Connell reports, including expanding Alexandria’s Mark Center. New lanes open near BRAC facility on Sept. 1.
Preliminary transportation improvements that will speed up traffic flow and alleviate congestion have been completed near Mark Center in Alexandria. The Virginia Department of Transportation announced that a new left lane on Mark Center Avenue and an additional right lane on eastbound Seminary Road from Mark Center Avenue, down the ramp to I-395 South, will be complete on Saturday, Sept. 1. The modifications to the roadway are the first in a series of short and mid-term improvements near the Mark Center complex, after the federal government moved 6,400 defense employees to the building as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. Congress is set to pass legislation today that chastises the Army and imposes restrictions to cap parking at the controversial Mark Center property in Alexandria at 2,000 spaces. The announcement was made today by U.S. Reps. Jim Moran (D-8), Gerry Connolly (D-11) and Virginia Sen. Mark Warner (D) at the U.S. Capitol. Language in the Department of Defense and the Military Construction Appropriations Acts will allow 2,000 parking spaces at the Washington Headquarters Services facility for more than 6,000 federal employees. Presidential hopeful Herman Cain spoke at the annual meeting of Docs4PatientCare in Alexandria this morning, but he avoided questions about women who have accused him of sexual harassment. Docs4patientcare is an organization that works to “preserve the good qualities of our healthcare system, address the problems, while preventing its bureaucratic destruction,” according to its website. Cain’s speech at the Hilton Hotel on Seminary Road near the Mark Center was not open to the public. Webb, Warner, Moran and Connolly question DoD Transportation Management and Occupation Plans for Mark Center property
Today, U.S. Reps. Jim Moran (D-8), Gerry Connolly (D-11) and Democratic Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner sent a letter of concern to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. They're worried that Interstate 395 will be a traffic-choked mess because of inadequate transportation planning at the Mark Center by the Department of Defense. The Base Realignment and Closure move at the Mark Center property near I-395 and Seminary Road, is home to Washington Headquarters Services, which will receive 5,000 of its 6,400 total relocated employees by this December. 2,500 employees moved in; 3,900 to come in the next year to the Mark Center.
Today marks the infamous Sept. 15 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) deadline, but it is not the local traffic doomsday people feared. That is because only about 2,500 federal employees have moved into Alexandria’s Mark Center at the intersection of I-395 and Seminary Road. The move-in of another 2,500 people will continue slowly through the rest of this year. The brand-new facility will eventually be the workplace for 6,400 Washington Headquarters Service employees. The remaining 1,400 employees are expected to move into the building by September 2012. Alexandria residents only have a few days to submit their concerns about the ramp proposed to connect the northbound HOV lane of I-395 to Seminary Road near Mark Center. VDOT wants input from residents who will be affected by the ramp, and are asking them to send issues to representatives in the Advisory Group. Group members then have until close of business Monday, Sept. 12, to submit their concerns to David Grover, who will draft a document to send to VDOT.
