Protestors perform the Electric Slide in front of Dominion headquarters in Richmond.
Earlier this month, members of the Mount Vernon group of the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club joined hundreds of other Virginians in Richmond to protest the construction of a natural gas plant in Brunswick County. Dominion Virginia Power will seek a permit from the State Corporation Commission in Richmond on Wednesday, April 24, to build the plant. The April 14 demonstration protested Dominion’s plant proposal, which the Sierra Club said demonstrates an investment in unsustainable energy and carbon-polluting fossil fuels. Participants in the demonstration performed the Electric Slide en masse to Marcia Griffiths’ 1976 song “Electric Boogie” to urge Dominion to “slide” toward clean energy. "This Earth Day the best thing we can do for our…

More than 600,000 people across the Northeast were without power following a blizzard that dumped more than three feet of snow in many areas.
Dominion Virginia Power crews went to New Jersey this weekend to help restore power to those who are in the cold and dark following Friday and Saturday’s major Northeast blizzard. Hamden, Conn. had more than 40 inches of snow on the ground as the storm left the area. Snow fell from Philadelphia to Maine, leaving more than 600,000 people without power by the time the last flakes fell. Crews from Virginia left Friday morning in bucket trucks headed for Morristown, N.J. — an area hit hard by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Morristown was not hit nearly as hard as areas of New England, and New Jersey Power and Light sent the Virginia crews back home late Saturday. Crews were ready to be up there for two weeks. Punxsutawney Phil and Potomac Phil predicted an early spring, but it's still cold for many struggling to pay for heat in Alexandria.
Punxsutawney Phil (and Potomac Phil) both predicted an early spring, but Alexandria is expecting a dusting of snow both Monday and Tuesday nights. That means temperatures are still wintry and heating bills are still high for residents in the area. Dominion Virginia Power is reminding customers that assistance is available for high heating bills this winter through the utility company’s Energy Share grants. Eligible customers may get a one-time payout of up to $600 to offset heating costs this winter. More than 12,000 customers received assistance in 2012. Dominion Power is urging their customers to be prepared with food and an emergency plan.
With a National Weather Service winter storm watch in place for Thursday morning for Alexandria, officials at Dominion Power, Alexandria City Public Schools and the Virginia Department of Transportation have their eyes glued to the weather forecasts. As of 4 p.m., forecasts varied. The National Weather Service revised its snow accumulation forecast down to 4 inches from an earlier 5 inches across the region. The Capital Weather Gang said "Because it’s not clear exactly how much moisture will make it into the region, snow accumulation is a huge question mark. For most of the D.C. area, we think just some conversational flakes to a couple inches is most likely, with more south and southwest of town and less to the north." Dominion Power …
