Swing's Celebrates Opening of New Coffee Bar

Elected officials lend a hand in Del Ray Business Association ribbon-cutting on E. Monroe Avenue.

M.E. Swing Coffee Roasters celebrated the opening of its new coffee bar on E. Monroe Avenue Saturday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that was attended by Mayor Bill Euille, Councilmembers John Chapman, Tim Lovain, Del Pepper and Justin Wilson and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne. Swing's Officially Opens Coffee Bar

The coffee bar at M.E. Swing’s Coffee Roasters on E. Monroe Avenue is officially open for business, the company announced Monday on its Facebook page. The bar held a soft opening last week. Swing’s will keep hours of 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and appease youth soccer parents at nearby Simpson Stadium Park on Saturdays with hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cafe, anchored by a long bar and featuring a variety of repurposed furniture, offers Swing’s signature blends of coffee, seasonal espresso drinks and a limited menu of non-coffee drinks. The bar includes cold-brewed iced coffee on tap. “We will be featuring pastries and a few savory items, but will not be doing any food prep,” Swing’s CEO Mark Warmuth told Patch in April…

Ribbon-Cutting Held at New Del Ray BB&T Branch

Bank branch officially opened April 8.

The Del Ray Business Association held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new BB&T branch located in the 1900 block of Mount Vernon Avenue during the First Thursday street festival. Located next to Fabulous Frocks of Alexandria, the bank opened its doors on April 8. First Thursday: 'Cirque du Del Ray'

Street festival scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday along Mount Vernon Avenue.

Outdoor season officially kicks off in Del Ray this week with the return of First Thursday. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 2, folks are invited to head down to Mount Vernon Avenue for “Cirque du Del Ray: A Healthy Carnival” presented by the Del Ray Business Association.  “Instead of a health fair, it’s a healthy carnival where kids and their families can come to participate in the fun of being healthy and active,” said event co-chair Megan Brown of Mind the Mat. Brown invites kids and adults to participate in a series of events that will be presented throughout the evening in the farmers market lot—redubbed “The Big Top”—at the corner of Mount Vernon and East Oxford avenues. Del Ray Variety, a new store located at 203 E. Custis Ave., held its grand opening on Saturday morning. The event included games and activities for children, animal adoptions from the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, and food from Del Ray Pizzeria, Caboose Bakery and Pork Barrel BBQ. U.S. Rep. Do Del Ray and Arlandria Need a Trolley?

With the Del Ray/Arlandria Trolley project slotted for cancelation, should another way to move visitors and residents be considered?

The Del Ray/Arlandria Trolley project, which made a bumpy ride through City Hall in 2012, appears to be off the tracks. With the city facing a $31 million budget shortfall, City Manager Rashad Young is recommending abandoning the project and its $700,000 price tag in his budget proposal for fiscal year 2014. The trolley is meant to bring tourists from Old Town to Del Ray/Arlandria. imo, two things adversely impact those tourist from visiting Del Ray: Wayfinding signage and a coordinated parking plan. The City spent money to complete a Wayfinding study. Implementation so far consists of public parking Wayfinding signs in Old Town and possibly a few replacement signs adhere to the recommended format. …   more ›

Greener Cleaner Claims 'Heart of Del Ray'

The “Heart of Del Ray” award is moving one storefront to the north. Greener Cleaner of Del Ray, located at 2210 Mount Vernon Ave., claimed the big cardboard heart after more than 550 people placed votes on the Del Ray Business Association website. The Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray, located next to the Greener Cleaner at 2204 Mount Vernon Ave., won the award last year.
