City Staff Discusses Bringing Carshare, Capital Bikeshare to Del Ray

Alexandria begins outreach process of expanding transportation programs.

Carshare and Capital Bikeshare coordinators with Alexandria met with the Del Ray Citizen Association’s Land Use Committee last week at Mount Vernon Recreation Center to begin the outreach process of bringing the programs to the neighborhood. Alexandria City Council approved the expansion of its eight-station Capital Bikeshare program in Old Town as part of its budget adoption last week. Planners are looking at adding stations in Del Ray and Carlyle, as well as potentially adding more in Old Town. Capital Bikeshare makes bicycles available for shared use mainly for short rides. The bikes are available at stations and members who pay for an annual or short-term membership fee can remove them from stations and return them to stations …

Carsharing Program Coming to Carlyle, East Eisenhower

Pilot program will take 10 to 12 public parking spaces away from public use.

Alexandria City Council unanimously approved a pilot program Tuesday for on-street carsharing in the Carlyle and East Eisenhower area. The program will take 10 to 12 parking spaces away from public use so Hertz can set up its carsharing vehicles in the area. The company will pay the city $1,500 per space annually. Mayor Bill Euille called the program “a move in the right direction and long overdue.” Zipcar currently operates 16 carsharing vehicles in off-street spaces in private parking facilities and at Metro stations primarily in the Old Town area. The area for the pilot program was chosen because of its density …

Hertz Car Sharing Proposal to Go Before Council in January

The city already operates a similar program, Carshare Alexandria!

Alexandria City Council is slated to decide Jan. 8 whether to allow a private company to use public parking spaces in the city for a car sharing program. The issue is whether the city should designate certain public spaces for private car share users 24 hours a day. Council members must decide where the spaces would be located, how many and what licensing fee the company making the proposal, Hertz, would pay the city, said Sandra Marks, acting deputy director for the city Department of Transportation and Environmental Services. "The city is active in promoting alternate modes of transportation, and car sharing allows people the ability to commute by transit, get rid of their car, and have a car if they need to make a trip,” Marks said. What about the needs of elderly and less mobile people who drive but walking or taking transit is not a possibility for them? Many do not qualify for a 'handicap' space. They have and are paying taxes for these parking places. Walking a small distance is difficult for many elderly people. I always want to remind younger people that they need to be sympathetic to the needs of the elderly. Unless …   more ›
