Rainy Snow Day: How Would You Describe Wednesday's Weather?

Following a lot of hype, Wednesday's storm proved to be a whole lot of nothing.

After a lot of hype, Wednesday’s snow in the Alexandria area turned out to be a whole lot of nothing. Alexandria City Public Schools were closed Wednesday and many families took in a snow day despite there being, well, not a whole lot of the white stuff outside of a few swirls of big, wet flakes. Perhaps the “snowquester” had to make some mandatory accumulation cuts? Followers of the Del Ray Patch Facebook page described Wednesday’s weather as “lame,” “cold disappointment,” “a total letdown” and “another Wednesday.” In one or two words, how would you describe Wednesday’s weather? Tell us in the comments section.

Light Snowfall Possible Monday, Tuesday Nights

Temperatures will warm up into 40s by Wednesday.

The big chill in Northern Virginia continues through Tuesday night with highs in the 30s on Monday and Tuesday. Expect cloudy skies during the days and a possiblity for snow flurries Monday and Tuesday nights, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will feel much colder Monday. Wind gusts up to 25 mph will continue through Monday afternoon. As a result of the wind, the National Weather Service has issued a Small Craft Advisory until 3 p.m. Monday that includes the Potomac River. This means that wind speeds of 18 to 33 knots are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions for small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions. Here are the daily …

Cold Temperatures, Snow Showers in the Forecast

Alexandria could see flurries or snow showers (and slick roads) both Wednesday and Friday as below freezing temperatures continue.

Temperatures will remain cold Thursday and Friday, according to local forecasters, and there’s a chance we’ll see flurries or snow showers across Alexandria before the weekend. Alexandria residents woke up to temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Wednesday morning under calm and clear skies. The temperature Wednesday may reach the upper 20s with wind chills remaining below 20 degrees throughout the day. Temperatures have been below freezing now for more than 100 hours, WTOP reported Wednesday morning. Two weather systems may come through Northern Virginia—one Wednesday night and the other Friday afternoon. Both bring a chance for flurries or very light snow, but even Friday’s storm may not bring enough to shovel or plow. Still, even a …

VDOT, Dominion Power Preparing for Possible Snow

Dominion Power is urging their customers to be prepared with food and an emergency plan.

With a National Weather Service winter storm watch in place for Thursday morning for Alexandria, officials at Dominion Power, Alexandria City Public Schools and the Virginia Department of Transportation have their eyes glued to the weather forecasts. As of 4 p.m., forecasts varied. The National Weather Service revised its snow accumulation forecast down to 4 inches from an earlier 5 inches across the region. The Capital Weather Gang said "Because it’s not clear exactly how much moisture will make it into the region, snow accumulation is a huge question mark. For most of the D.C. area, we think just some conversational flakes to a couple inches is most likely, with more south and southwest of town and less to the north." Dominion Power …

Driving Tips for Winter Weather

If it gets slick out there, here's how to make your travels safer.

While slip-sliding cars on snowy roads can make for interesting (cringe-inducing) YouTube videos, you never want to be driving one of those cars. Here are tips on how to drive safely on snowy and icy roads: Have an emergency kit and good supplies. In the winter months, AAA recommends that you keep the following items in your vehicle: Leave room. It can take a driver twice as long (and twice as much space) to stop a vehicle when driving in snow versus driving on dry pavement. You should leave twice as much room as you normally would between you and other vehicles on the road. Slow down. Driving too quickly for the conditions is the biggest cause of snow crashes, according to Edmunds.com. Don’t slam on your brakes. If you’re sliding on a …

Winter Weather Forecast: Normal Temps, More Snow—Maybe

First snowfall in early December. Blizzard Jan. 30 - 31. Are you ready?

Jason Samenow of the Capital Weather Gang said he knows of no meteorologist, including himself, who "assign[s] any legitimacy to the Old Farmer's Almanac weather predictions." But even Samenow admits that sometimes the Almanac gets it right. The Farmers' Almanac said it was "on the money" in 2011 with several forecasts, including these: • "Accurately predicted a major snowstorm for the Northeastern and Great Lakes states for early February 2011. At that time, heavy snow did pound the Northeastern U.S., while a blizzard shut down Chicago." • "Predicted that the spring of 2011 would be exceptionally wet, and that parts of the U.S. would see a very active tornado season. This proved to be true when flooding overwhelmed the Mississippi River …
