Following a lot of hype, Wednesday's storm proved to be a whole lot of nothing.
After a lot of hype, Wednesday’s snow in the Alexandria area turned out to be a whole lot of nothing. Alexandria City Public Schools were closed Wednesday and many families took in a snow day despite there being, well, not a whole lot of the white stuff outside of a few swirls of big, wet flakes. Perhaps the “snowquester” had to make some mandatory accumulation cuts? Followers of the Del Ray Patch Facebook page described Wednesday’s weather as “lame,” “cold disappointment,” “a total letdown” and “another Wednesday.” In one or two words, how would you describe Wednesday’s weather? Temperatures will warm up into 40s by Wednesday.
The big chill in Northern Virginia continues through Tuesday night with highs in the 30s on Monday and Tuesday. Expect cloudy skies during the days and a possiblity for snow flurries Monday and Tuesday nights, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will feel much colder Monday. Wind gusts up to 25 mph will continue through Monday afternoon. As a result of the wind, the National Weather Service has issued a Small Craft Advisory until 3 p.m. Monday that includes the Potomac River. This means that wind speeds of 18 to 33 knots are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions for small craft. Due to inclement weather, the public school division is opening two hours late Jan. 28.
Alexandria City Public Schools are opening on a two-hour delay Monday, Jan. 28, due to inclement weather. St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School and Bishop Ireton are also opening two hours late. Alexandria Country Day School, Blessed Sacrament School, St. Mary's Catholic School and Commonwealth Academy are all opening with two-hour delays. Federal offices in the Washington, DC area will open at noon. City of Alexandria offices are open as scheduled with unscheduled leave permitted for employees.

Alexandria could see flurries or snow showers (and slick roads) both Wednesday and Friday as below freezing temperatures continue.
Temperatures will remain cold Thursday and Friday, according to local forecasters, and there’s a chance we’ll see flurries or snow showers across Alexandria before the weekend. Alexandria residents woke up to temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees Wednesday morning under calm and clear skies. The temperature Wednesday may reach the upper 20s with wind chills remaining below 20 degrees throughout the day. Temperatures have been below freezing now for more than 100 hours, WTOP reported Wednesday morning. The forecast for snow accumulations has lessened in Alexandria and throughout Northern Virginia.
Update 2:30 p.m. Thursday: The winter weather advisory for the D.C. metro area has been canceled. Temperatures are now expected to remain in the mid- to upper 30s with rain. Dominion Power is urging their customers to be prepared with food and an emergency plan.
With a National Weather Service winter storm watch in place for Thursday morning for Alexandria, officials at Dominion Power, Alexandria City Public Schools and the Virginia Department of Transportation have their eyes glued to the weather forecasts. As of 4 p.m., forecasts varied. The National Weather Service revised its snow accumulation forecast down to 4 inches from an earlier 5 inches across the region. The Capital Weather Gang said "Because it’s not clear exactly how much moisture will make it into the region, snow accumulation is a huge question mark.
