Renaldo Nehemiah, Super Bowl Champ, Gives Hope to Inmates

Former San Francisco 49ers player, track star spoke Thursday to men and women at Alexandria’s detention center.

Fame and fortune aside, Renaldo Nehemiah has faced challenges in life. Nehemiah was born partially deaf in his right ear. At age 14, he lost his mother to breast cancer. When he was 34, he learned he had been adopted. It’s his faith in God that got him through the tough times, Nehemiah told inmates Thursday in Alexandria at the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center. “I could choose to feel sorry for myself, or I could use to be inspired,” he said. “ … God loves unconditionally, and I learned that very early.” Nehemiah, a 1984 Super Bowl champion and track and field phenomenon, spoke at the jail as part of a speaker series for adults involved in programs such as education, sober living or English language classes. Inmates Honored for Earning GEDs, Food Safety Certification

Inmates of the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center of Alexandria celebrated for educational success.

Eight inmates of the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center have received certificates of achievement for passing their GED examinations. On Thursday, Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne and his staff hosted a special ceremony to honor the inmates, and Education Coordinator Krista Sofonia presented Jose Cruz Argueta, Edsel Dugais, Erik Lacayo, Christopher Paulk and Sean Randolph with the honors. The five wore caps and gowns and were cheered by visiting family members invited to attend the ceremony. Sofonia thanked GED volunteers, including Mary Jane Malone of Del Ray and AnnMarie Almaguer, a graduate student at Marymount University who completed an internship at the detention center this fall.
