Theological Seminary in Alexandria to Build New Entrance

New main entrance is part of improvements to the campus, including a new chapel to replace the one lost in a 2010 fire.

Virginia Theological Seminary is preparing to construct a new main campus entrance on Seminary Road as part of improvements that also include building a new chapel to replace one that burned in 2010. The new entrance is part of the seminary’s campus improvements that include a “Worship and Welcome Quad.” The new Immanuel Chapel will be built near where the former chapel stood, and the seminary has completed a “Chapel for the Ages” capital campaign to raise $13 million for the construction. The old chapel will be transformed into an outdoor sacred space. Alexandria Seminary to Hold Christian Rock Concert

Performers include Five Iron Frenzy, the Letter Black, Fran McKendree, the Sloan River Project and Joel Joa.

The Virginia Theological Seminary will hold a Christian rock concert April 13 on its campus, located at 3737 Seminary Rd. The seminary’s Rev. J. Barney Hawkins told members of the Seminary Hill Association Thursday evening that concert attendance will be capped at 2,000 people. The alcohol-free event will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 10 p.m. The day will feature artists including Five Iron Frenzy, the Letter Black, Fran McKendree, the Sloan River Project and Joel Joa. Hawkins said the seminary has filed for all necessary permits and that Alexandria police will help guide traffic. Alexandria City Council gave permission Saturday for the Virginia Theological Seminary to build a new chapel to replace one that burned in 2010. The new, 20,000-square-foot chapel will be certified LEED Silver and have a 100-foot-tall steeple. The seminary also has plans to renovate and build a 900-square-foot addition to Packard-Laird Hall, which serves as its welcome center. The new chapel will be built between the welcome center and the Federal House. The plan also includes improvements to the Seminary Road entrance, reconfiguration of some parking spaces and traffic circulation improvements. The chapel’s design incorporates the architectural history of Anglican churches in Virginia and includes elements of Georgian and Romanesque …

The new, 20,000-square-foot chapel will be certified LEED Silver and have a 100-foot-tall steeple. Two Alexandria Post Offices Under Review

Del Ray and Seminary locations could close

Two post offices in the City of Alexandria are under review for potential closure, according to a list released Tuesday by the U.S. Postal Service. The Mt. Vernon Avenue post office in Del Ray and the office in the Virginia Theological Seminary are the two locations under consideration. In a release Tuesday, the United States Postal Service said it is “right-sizing its expansive retail network” of nearly 32,000 offices because the need for that many locations has diminished as customers conduct their postal business online or elsewhere. Approximately 3,700 offices around the country will be studied, according to the release.
