Cash, iPad Stolen During VeloCity Break-in

Bicycle nonprofit is third Del Ray shop to suffer theft in January.

An iPad and cash were stolen from VeloCity Bicycle Cooperative on Mount Vernon Avenue during a break-in that is believed to have occurred Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, according to VeloCity cofounder Christian Myers. The Mount Vernon shop is the headquarters for the nonprofit, which educates community members about bike maintenance, safety and other issues. Used bikes are refurbished at sold at the shop.  Myers said he uses the iPad to make credit card transactions. The cash was stolen from the shop’s register. Myers said he did not notice any signs of a break-in until he opened the register to make a transaction on Wednesday. Along with the stolen items, Myers said a locked green cabinet showed evidence that someone attempted …

Part of the reason to leave it in overnight is so the morning manager/staff can make the deposit at the bank instead of someone carrying a lot of cash out of the building at night after they close. I'm not saying that is what happened here but I have worked in a number of restaurants in my life where this was the case. Granted, we normally at least put it into a safe overnight.   more ›

VeloCity Ending Bike Drive with Holiday Party

Nonprofit seeking donations of kids bikes for the Alexandria Police Department and St. Rita's.

VeloCity Bicycle Cooperative is hosting a holiday bash from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday featuring light fare, beverages, music, art and more. The party closes out the nonprofit’s holiday kids bike drive and organizers are still seeking donations. “A few of the bikes will go to the Alexandria police and the others will go to St. Rita’s,” VeloCity co-founder Christian Myers said. “We’re looking still looking for kids bike donations and donations of the monetary kind. Those are especially important because we need to pay to fix up the donated bikes.” Those who donate bikes to the drive are promised VIP treatment at the holiday party, which will include a fundraising sale of bike-inspired artwork, door prizes and, well, plenty of holiday cheer. …

VeloCity Hosting Ice Cream Ride on Saturday

VeloCity Bicycle Cooperative is organizing a community ride to several of Alexandria's favorite ice cream and frozen custard shops.

VeloCity Bicycle Cooperative has the perfect remedy for the summertime blues—an ice cream ride around Alexandria. Cyclists can gather at VeloCity’s facility located at 2111 Mt. Vernon Ave. in Del Ray at 6 p.m. Saturday. The group will then take a casual group ride around the city with stops at three local frozen treat shops—Pop’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Company located at 109 King St. in Old Town, the Coldstone Creamery located at 329 Swamp Fox Rd., before a final stop back in Del Ray at The Dairy Godmother at 2310 Mt. Vernon Ave. Cruiser bikes are suggested for the trip but not required. Kids are welcome, too, but parents might keep in mind that a route connecting all three stops would be approximately 7.2 miles. VeloCity Bicycle Co-op Hosting First Women's Night

Event will feature open shop at Mt. Vernon Avenue facility followed by a community bike ride.

Velocity Bicycle Cooperative is hosting its first ever women’s night on Monday. Beginning at 5 p.m., women are invited for open shop hours at the co-op’s new facility at 2111 Mt. Vernon Avenue. The assembled group will then go on a neighborhood bike ride through Del Ray at 6 p.m. “We just noticed that the ladies were out-numbered at VeloCity and wanted to think of a way to help bring women in and also make the women who come feel more comfortable,” VeloCity’s Lori Kartchner wrote in an email to Patch.  Kartchner said she thinks the evening will be a good opportunity to dust off those bicycles that have been put away for the winter and get them working again.  “I think it [will] give people a chance to ask those questions they might …

VeloCity Opens Its Doors in Del Ray

Bicycle cooperative holding its 'soft opening' Saturday at its new Mt. Vernon Avenue location.

VeloCity Bicycle Cooperative is making its “soft opening” at 10 a.m. Saturday at its new digs at 2111 Mt. Vernon Ave. The nonprofit, which educates community members about bike maintenance, safety and other issues, was displaced from its Old Town location on S. Union St. when the building was sold. “Not all things fully set and ready but we are anxious to start to provide services to the community,” VeloCity Director John Patterson wrote in an email on Friday.  On the VeloCity website, Patterson wrote that not all products and services may be available on Saturday, so those entering the shop should probably come armed with some patience. The nonprofit has offered free pedicab service at First Thursdays in Del Ray and also had a tent …
