Organizers believe a record number of participants graced the 37th edition of the Alexandria Turkey Trot on Thursday. More than 4,600 runners, walkers and stroller-pushers signed up prior to race day, with several hundred more registering in a small window before Thursday morning's starting gun. The 5-mile trot, which sends runners through the streets of Del Ray and Rosemont, was staged at George Washington Middle School for the second straight year. Organizers made the move last year to make the race Metro accessible and to provide a bigger staging area. The 37th annual Alexandria Turkey Trot is set for a 9 a.m. start Thursday at George Washington Middle School, an hour earlier than previous years. The 5-mile Thanksgiving Day race is sponsored and coordinated by the Del Ray Business Association and the DC Road Runners Club. Online registration remains open until Tuesday. Preregistered runners are encouraged to pick up their race packets between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday at the George Washington gym. In-person registration will also be available on Wednesday night. Runners may also register in the middle school gym beginning at 7:30 a.m. the day of the race if spots remain available. The Alexandria Turkey Trot is going in a new direction this year. After 35 years of starting and finishing the race in front of Cora Kelly School, the 36th incarnation of the Thanksgiving Day run will begin and finish at George Washington Middle School. The new location makes the region’s largest Turkey Day race more Metro accessible. “This will allow hundreds, if not thousands of racers to leave the car at home and give access to the race to many more runners,” said Jill Erber, Del Ray Business Association race chair and owner of Cheestique.
