Alexandria city staff will discuss neighborhood traffic, the Route 1 BRT and the status of the Del Ray/Arlandria Trolley.
The City of Alexandria is hosting a community meeting to discuss transportation issues in Del Ray, including neighborhood traffic, the Route 1 BRT and the status of the Del Ray/Arlandria Trolley. The meeting is scheduled to run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mount Vernon Recreation Center. The meeting comes after a group of citizens hit Alexandria City Council a second time with concerns over truck traffic and speeding on E. Custis, E. Howell and Monroe avenues and also worries over the burgeoning development in Potomac Yard and its transportation effects on Del Ray. Rich Baier, director of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, told council at a Nov. 17 hearing that money is again available in the …

Incumbent Democratic Mayor Bill Euille debated independent challenger Andrew Macdonald Tuesday night at George Washington Middle School.
Alexandria’s two mayoral candidates squared off Tuesday night debating the most starkly defining topics of their platforms — development and density — while addressing other city priorities such as affordable housing, transportation and green space. The two native Alexandrians who used to play basketball together as kids found themselves once again on opposite sides of the court in their approach to the direction of the city. Incumbent Democratic Mayor Bill Euille told the audience at George Washington Middle School that the city has made great strides in growth and livability by attracting development such as the 11,000-employee Patent and Trademark Office, a rebuilt Wilson Bridge and a complete overhaul of schools such as T.C. Williams …

At a community meeting, West Street residents say their street is ill-designed to handle motorized trolley service connecting Old Town and Del Ray.
Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is reaching out to citizens for input on six alternative routes for the expansion of motorized trolley service onto Mt. Vernon Avenue. T&ES posted a survey on the city’s website asking for citizen preferences on routes, the name of the line and hours of service. All six route alternatives begin at King Street Metro station and terminate at varying destinations after moving north along Mt. Vernon Avenue. Two of the alternatives go all the way to Arlington Ridge Shopping Center across Four Mile Run. Some suggested routes use West Street to connect Old Town with Del Ray, while others use Commonwealth Avenue. The routes using Commonwealth Avenue do not make stops at Braddock…

City will discuss proposed route and hours of operation for Mt. Vernon Avenue trolley.
Alexandria is holding a second public information meeting concerning expansion of motorized trolley service down Mt. Vernon Avenue at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning at Cora Kelly Recreation Center. At the meeting, city officials will present an overview of the project and discuss preferred routing, hours of operation and headways. In March, Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services revealed the proposed trolley route (see attached map) at a public meeting. At the time, members of the Arlandria-Chirilagua Business Association raised concerns that the proposed route didn’t go farther north into Arlandria. A few weeks later, members of Alexandria City Council also expressed concerns about the route not going a few more …

DRBA President says free motorized trolley could be demonstrated later in May.
Trolley service will not debut on Mt. Vernon Avenue during this week’s First Thursday street festival. Del Ray Business Association President Maria Wasowski said the city had previously made a commitment to demonstrate the motorized trolley at the first First Thursday of 2012. However, discussions of the trolley’s regular service route, particularly how far north into Arlandria the free trolley should travel, have temporarily stalled the project. “The folks at [Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services] feel that they have to have the route figured out before they run the trolley on First Thursday, so we won't have it this month,” Wasowski wrote in an email. “We hope to have a trolley running during the June …

Proposed route will connect King Street and Braddock Road Metro stations before heading up Mt. Vernon Avenue.
With more than a half-dozen routes on the drawing board, Alexandriaʼs Department of Transportation and Environmental Services announced Wednesday that it has selected a recommended route for trolley service in Del Ray. The preferred routing for the trolley, revealed at a community meeting Wednesday night at George Washington Middle School, will start at King Street Metro station, head east on King Street, then north on West Street, stopping at the Braddock Road Metro station. From there, the trolley will hop on Braddock Road and head up Mt. Vernon Avenue. The trolley will cross over West Glebe Road, then head east on West Reed Avenue, passing Cora Kelly Recreation Center. Then the trolley will go down Commonwealth Avenue, turning right on …

Alexandria's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is looking into increasing the hours of service for the King Street trolley.
Regular trolley service in Del Ray will begin in September or October at the earliest, according to Alexandria’s director of Transportation and Environmental Services. T&ES chief Rich Baier told Del Ray Patch that despite the city allocating more than $500,000 in the fiscal year 2012 budget toward implementing the motorized trolley service in the neighborhood, the process of selecting a contractor and other matters will push the project into the fall. T&ES Deputy Director Abi Lerner said some of the approximately $510,000 that was allotted for expanding trolley service into Del Ray will be rolled over and combined with new funding in FY2013. How much that is rolled over remains to be determined. From the $510,000, about $190,000 will go …

Waterfront Work Group discusses trolley and transportation linkages.
Alexandria is currently looking to expand trolley service outside of Old Town, with several proposed routes in Del Ray. Abi Lerner of the city’s Department of Transportation and Environment Services briefed the Del Ray Citizens Association on Monday about some potential routes in Del Ray and Carlyle. The motorized trolley currently runs free passenger service from King Street Metro station down to the waterfront along King Street. Lerner identified four alternative routes under examination. The first would start at Braddock Road Metro station, move north on Mt. Vernon Avenue and then loop down Commonwealth Avenue by Cora Kelly School and back to Mt. Vernon along W. Reed Avenue. A second alternative would start at Braddock Metro, run north …

Wish list includes sidewalk lighting, trolley and Easter parade
The Del Ray Business Association recently elected a new president, Eric Nelson, co-owner (with Rob Kingsbury) of ACKC Cocoa Bar. Nelson will take the reins from Jill Erber, owner of Cheesetique. Taking a moment from opening a new store in the Carlyle area of Alexandria, Nelson previewed some of the priorities he and the association's members plan to pursue in 2011. Those include: "We're hoping to get federal funding for solar-powered pedestrian lighting, and have it be a pilot program," Nelson said. "The street lighting we have right now is not very inviting." Rep. Jim Moran discussed the possibility of a new lighting with the DRBA in September. The recently re-elected congressman has been working on such pilot project, but has …
