Sen. Kaine, Rep. Duckworth Tout Troop Talent Act in Alexandria

Bill would streamline the military-to-civilian licensing process for certain occupations.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-8th, Ill.) visited American Legion Post 24 in Old Town Tuesday to discuss the Troop Talent Act, a bill designed to streamline the military-to-civilian licensing process for certain occupations. “It’s the right thing to do for those who served,” said Kaine, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in November and serves on the Armed Forces committee. “And it helps our economy.” Kaine and Duckworth, a Purple Heart recipient from the Iraq War and first-time congresswoman, both spoke of the difficulty veterans face when transitioning back to civilian and professional life. Often the training some soldiers receive is not accredited in the private sector. The unemployment rate for veterans …

Virginia Senators Address Four Mile Run on Capitol Hill

Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner offer language promoting Alexandria and Arlington's Four Mile Run as a recreational resource.

Virginia’s Democratic Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine Wednesday offered an amendment to an environmental bill that will promote efforts to restore Four Mile Run as a recreational resource. The senators amended the Water Resources Development Act, which passed the Senate Wednesday by a vote of 83-14. They offered two other amendments to the measure—one dealing with a marine terminal on Craney Island and the other to increase authorized funding for oyster restoration. “… I am pleased we…were successful in updating an outdated regulation that prevented the Four Mile Run project from moving forward into a recreational and ecological resource for Northern Virginia,” Warner said in a statement. “This bill will advance a project of critical …

Jimbo, so what you're saying is that it was actually MS-13 behind the attack in London? Or are you saying that radical Islamic fanatics are taking over Four Mile Run? I to go by the Four Mile Run park all the time but don't see "... the passed out drunken illegals laying around in the fields..." If they are in fact actually there, as you say, they should be quite easy to round up by the APD for …   more ›

Jobs for Veterans: Kaine's Troop Talent Act Hits Congress

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine's (D-VA) Troop Talent Act of 2013 would help transition between military and civilian employment.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine’s (D-Va) bill to help veterans find employment and other resources more easily once entering civilian life was introduced Monday to the U.S. House of Representatives. The Troop Talent Act of 2013 is designed to help veterans translate their military skills and credentials into civilian employment, Kaine said. As of March 2013, the unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans was 9.2 percent. That’s down slightly from 9.4 percent in February 2013 but still higher than the national average of 7.1 percent. U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) called that number "unacceptable" as she introduced the Troop Talent Act to the House of Represetatives on Monday. “The unemployment rate for Veterans who have served in the military since …

McDonnell: Sequester Could Force Virginia Into Recession

Governor sends letter to president, congressional delegation.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell on Monday sent a letter to President Barack Obama and the Old Dominion's congressional delegation calling for immediate action to prevent automatic spending cuts under sequestration. The $1.2 trillion in cuts — meant to force Congress to compromise, which hasn't happened — are slated to go into effect March 1. That deadline has been pushed back several times as lawmakers have brokered Band-Aid solutions. "The automatic sequestration reductions mandated by the Budget Control Act of 2011 are already having a significant adverse effect on the Commonwealth," McDonnell stated. "When fully implemented, they could force Virginia and other states into a recession. Sequestration-mandated reductions will be implemented …

Kaine: Sequestration to Affect Education Funding in Virginia

Virginia’s junior senator calls sequestration ‘abdication of responsibility.’

The looming sequestration that is slated to cut military spending across the board will also cost Virginia about $48 million in federal funds for pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade education, U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine told educators Friday in Alexandria. Speaking to local school officials and state education advocates at the Campagna Center in Old Town, Kaine, a Democrat, said the cuts would also eliminate 7,000 Head Start slots in the state. If the March 1 sequester goes through, 10,000 teacher jobs would be at risk nationwide, as well as funding for up to 7,200 special education teachers, aides and staff, according to Kaine’s office. Kaine, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, said he maintained hope sequestration could be avoided. “I …

Kaine Pledges Bipartisan Work in Washington

New Virginia senator says first order of business is to work on good solutions to nation's debt.

Tim Kaine (D), Virginia's newly-elected U.S. Senator, says his first order of business will be to lobby for longterm solutions for the country's fiscal situation. Kaine held a press conference in Richmond on Wednesday, one day after he defeated former Virginia governor and senator George Allen (R) in the general election. Kaine, governor of the state from 2006-10, earned 52 percent of the vote to Allen's 48 on Tuesday. In Alexandria, Kaine earned almost 73 percent of the vote. The Democrat earned an even higher percent of the vote in Del Ray-area precincts George Washington Moddle School, Mount Vernon Recreation Center and Cora Kelly School. Kaine takes over the seat vacated by Sen. Jim Webb (D), who is retiring after one term. Webb …

U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine (D) says there are still undecided voters to be had days before the election.

Tim Kaine says there are still undecided voters to be had in the final days of his campaign for U.S. Senate, while the primary focus shifts toward getting out the vote on Tuesday. “With the undecided voters, we find they’re really looking for someone who can break the gridlock,” the Democrat said Thursday morning at the Alexandria Seaport Foundation workshop at the foot of Duke Street in Old Town. “I think I’ve shown I am someone who does that. …Our closing message ads show that I am someone who can do that.” In the ad, Kaine promises to bring “more partnership and less partisanship to Washington” to reduce the debt, to invest in schools and small businesses and to grown the middle class and create jobs. Virginia Split-Ticket Voters Could Affect Kaine, Allen Election Prospects

Voters for President Barack Obama or Gov. Mitt Romney may split their ticket and not vote a straight Democrat or Republican ticket down the ballot; "split ticket voters" could affect election prospects for Senate candidates George Allen and Tim Kaine.

Driving through Northern Virginia, it's quite rare to see yards with signs revealing that a homeowner plans to vote both Republican and Democrat on Nov. 6. Even if they don't openly proclaim their split-ticket status, they're out there, according to polling. These "split ticket voters" plan to step into the polling booth on Election Day to vote for a Republican and a Democrat: Voting for President Barack Obama and Republican Senate candidate George Allen, or for Republican presidential candidate Gov. Mitt Romney and Democratic Senate candidate Tim Kaine. "It is a real possibility that Romney could win Virginia while George Allen loses," said Mark Rozell, professor of Public Policy at George Mason University. "Some polls have shown that Tim…

Anne Holton Brings College Tour to Alexandria

Wife of U.S. Senate candidate, former Gov. Tim Kaine, visits Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria campus.

Former Virginia First Lady Anne Holton toured science classrooms, visited a math lab and reviewed designs for a new arts building while speaking with students and faculty Friday afternoon at the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Holton, whose husband, former Gov. Tim Kaine, is a Democrat running for U.S. Senate, has spent the past month touring community colleges and other institutions of higher learning for the past month. Holton told Patch she was impressed with what she saw during Friday’s visit. “We’ve just been visiting all across the state looking at some of our great community colleges and higher ed facilities,” she said. “And they’re just part an important part of the economy, and my husband’s a big fan of …
