Delight Magazine Names The Happy Tart to 'Best Bakeries' List

Bakeries praised for their 100-percent, gluten-free selections.

Delight Magazine, a publication for those with celiac disease, gluten intolerance, food allergies and sensitivities, recently named The Happy Tart to its “Best Bakeries in America” list. The Happy Tart, located at 2307a Mount Vernon Ave. in Del Ray, is one of 20 gluten-free bakeries on the list, which is included in the magazine’s March-April issue and is also posted online.  Delight Magazine selected eateries that are 100 percent gluten-free. According to the magazine’s website: We think finding an exclusively gluten-free menu of itself is a treat. Order gluten-free treats freely and with ease (no worry about cross-contamination at any of these bakeries). Grab something on the go, dine in and enjoy a special treat or have some goodies …

Happy Tart Celebrating One-Year Anniversary

Owner Emma Cech hosting a day of treats and fun.

The Happy Tart is celebrating its one-year anniversary on Saturday with a day of treats and fun. “Hard to believe, but a year has passed since we opened our doors on a cold January day with sleet on the ground,” owner Emma Cech wrote in an email to customers. “We have come a long way in a year. We started with one display case, we now have four; one baker, we now have five!”  Cech opened her gluten-free bakery at 2307A Mount Vernon Ave. on Jan. 21, 2012 to much fanfare. Saturday’s festivities will include birthday cake, door prizes, scavenger hunts and the return of some favorite treats like bearclaws, fennel raisin bread, mango lime squares and varieties of hazelnut cupcakes. The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. For the …

Taste of Del Ray Brings Out the Masses

Del Ray Pizzeria and Evening Star Cafe take top awards at 2012 Taste of Del Ray.

Residents of the Del Ray community and beyond came out with a hunger like no other Sunday for the fourth annual Taste of Del Ray. “Tickets for entrance to the Taste of Del Ray went extremely fast today,” said Gayle Reuter, a board member with Del Ray Business Association. With ideal weather conditions, the number of attendees exceeded the 1,000 mark with ease, Reuter said. She estimated that this year’s turnout in the parking lot behind the Virginia Commerce Bank surpassed previous totals, noting that the DRBA had to stop selling tickets in order to ensure that paid entrants would get their money's (and tummy's) worth. With celebrity judge Rock Harper on hand, a dozen local eateries went toe-to-toe vying for top positions in two categories…

I love the location of the market and the fact that on Saturday's it is the gathering place in the heart of the neighborhood. The market master has done a great job of organizing the market and working with both the farmers and the community groups that come out year round. Having worked many tables at the market over the years, the crowds tend to come between 9-10 a.m -- come before or after to …   more ›

Gluten-Free Bakery Opens in Del Ray

Crowds swarm into The Happy Tart

Customers filed non-stop Saturday into The Happy Tart, Del Ray’s new gluten-free patisserie, to snap up mouth-watering pies, tarts and cupcakes. Owner and chef Emma Cech bustled back and forth between the kitchen and the front counter. Sometimes, she said, people who cannot eat gluten feel like second-class citizens because of the limited gluten-free food options available today. Not at The Happy Tart, tucked away from the street at 2307A Mount Vernon Ave. “While in culinary school, I found out that I had Celiac’s, and that was a bit inconvenient, because I couldn’t taste anything,” Cech said. “I went to work for a catering company, which was great, except I couldn’t taste anything. And also, the quality of gluten-free products out there …

The Happy Tart to Open Jan. 21

Owner Emma Cech promises plenty of free samples.

The Happy Tart, a new gluten-free patisserie located at 2307A Mt. Vernon Avenue, will officially open for business on Jan. 21. “We’re hoping to change people’s perception of gluten-free options,” owner Emma Cech said. The Happy Tart was profiled in Del Ray Patch in August. Cech was aiming to open her bakery for Art on the Avenue in early October, but obtaining permits and other processes backed things up.   “Everything just takes more time than you think it needs too,” Cech said. The doors will open at 8 a.m. on Jan. 21. Cech promises to have plenty of free samples of breads, tarts, cookies, cakes and pastries. Cech is currently looking for counter help and a baker’s assistant. Those interested in the open positions are encouraged to call …
