Alexandria is a community that supports and enhances the well-being, success, and achievement of children, youth and families: True or False? The title of this editorial is a statement of Goal 4 of the City’s Strategic Plan that was adopted in 2010. The question posed about its accuracy is one that I invite readers to evaluate. As the Chair of the newly formed Children Youth and Families Collaborative Commission, I can confidently say that our raison d’etre is centered on working together to ensure that there are tangible data points that validate the city’s commitment to this goal and that the results we seek for our children and families are overwhelmingly evident. Cabinet Members Preach 'Look Before You Lock'

Two members of President Barack Obama’s cabinet held a press conference at the Campagna Center’s Head Start location at George Washington Middle School on Friday morning to bring attention to a string of recent child deaths due to heatstroke. U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius urged Head Start and childcare providers around the country to be alert to the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles and promote a campaign titled “Look Before You Lock.” In the first week of August, eight children across the country died from heatstroke. At least 23 child deaths and an unknown number of injuries have occurred this summer due to hyperthermia. “This campaign is …

The Campagna Center Welcomes a New CEO

Tammy Mann officially began as The Campagna Center's president and CEO on Aug. 1

For Tammy Mann, accepting the position of president and CEO of The Campagna Center, allowed her career to come full circle. Mann, a Fairfax – and former Alexandria – resident, officially began her new job on Monday. She comes to the center with a background in psychology and experience in dealing with policy surrounding early education. “I’ve missed feeling grounded and involved at the community level,” Mann said last week. Prior to acquiring her new title, Mann worked at the United Negro College Fund as the executive director of the Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute. In that role, Mann worked to inform policymakers about educational opportunities for African Americans. She also worked as the deputy executive director of the …
