Del Ray Pizzeria Hosting Super Bowl Wing Eating Contest

How many "XXX" chicken wings can you can eat in 5 minutes?

Del Ray Pizzeria on Mount Vernon Avenue is hosting a chicken wing eating contest on Sunday during halftime of Super Bowl XLVII. “We were thinking we weren’t too excited about either of the teams, so we thought a wing eating contest might be a way to have some more fun,” DRP Chef Eric Reid said. The winner of the contest will be determined by who can eat the most “XXX” wings—the restaurant’s hottest variety—in 5 minutes. Those interested in competing can register for the contest at the DRP bar. There is a $15 registration fee. The Ravens has won three games—in 2003, 2007 and 2011. The 49ers won in 1996.   *  [More: History of the San Francisco 49ers - Ravens games.] Where to Watch Super Bowl XLVII in Alexandria and Washington Alexandria has plenty of sports bars with …

Del Ray Dish

Super Bowl Sunday Seven-Layer Dip

Middle East meets Southwest for a football inspired dip

As Super Bowl Sunday was nearing, I was left trying to find a dish that I could bring to my neighborhood party. What could I bring that might appeal to both the adults and the children party-goers? A good friend of mine suggested a fantastic rendition of the seven-layer bean dip but with a twist. As I read the contents of the recipe, I got excited thinking this might be something that my boys would actually eat. Funny how the children of a chef are the pickiest eaters. This is completely frustrating but I hope they outgrow this some day soon. I can only hope.  Instead of using refried beans and cheddar cheese, hummus and feta are substituted. My boys love hummus and not only is this version healthy, I can serve it with raw vegetables and …
