The new crosswalks are aimed at combating cut-through traffic—including trucks and speeding vehicles—between the two thoroughfares and maintaining Del Ray’s pedestrian-friendly reputation. Blue buses will utilize bus-only lanes connecting Crystal City and Potomac Yard.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will call the Crystal City-Potomac Yard Transitway “Metro Way” and the vehicles utilizing the region’s first network of bus-only lanes will get a blue color scheme, according to Greater Greater Washington. A public survey posted in March was used to help WMATA determined the branding and color scheme. The Route 1 BRT will ultimately connect Braddock Road and Crystal City Metro stations, with a future extension to Pentagon City. Construction began in July 2012. Nonprofit initiated Jackson Crossing development on Reed Avenue in 2012.
AHC Inc. was recently named the recipient of the 2013 “Nonprofit Developer of the Year” award from the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers. The award recognizes the most outstanding and innovative housing developments and programs in the Washington, DC metro area. In 2012, AHC initiated, preserved or opened five affordable housing projects—including the 78-unit Jackson Crossing affordable housing development at the corner of E. Reed Avenue and Route 1. The project is the first for AHC in Alexandria. A decision to construct a right-hand turn lane on southbound Route 1 onto E. Reed Avenue could be right around the corner. The City of Alexandria is hosting a community meeting to discuss transportation issues in Del Ray, including neighborhood traffic, the Route 1 BRT and the status of the Del Ray/Arlandria Trolley. The meeting is scheduled to run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mount Vernon Recreation Center. The meeting comes after a group of citizens hit Alexandria City Council a second time with concerns over truck traffic and speeding on E. Custis, E. Howell and Monroe avenues and also worries over the burgeoning development in Potomac Yard and its transportation effects on Del Ray. New sod in the median of Route 1 was removed just as quickly as it was installed to make way for BRT construction.
A few weeks ago, the medians along Route 1 just east of Del Ray were fitted with new sod. Then, just as quickly, a large swath of the sod was removed, leaving a naked strip of dirt and many commuters and nearby residents confused as to what happened. The swift removal of the sod was not a mistake; Route 1 was expanded over the summer to make way for the construction of a bus rapid transitway and sod was temporarily placed in the former northbound lanes to control erosion and sediment. The sod was then removed to make way for construction of the BRT, which was approved by City Council in May. Alexandria City Council requests study during discussion of proposed Reed Avenue development.
Alexandria City Council requested city staff study the possible creation of a right-turn lane from Jefferson Davis Highway onto E. Reed Avenue last week when discussing a proposed housing development near the intersection. Council authorized a $250,000 loan to AHC, Inc., from the City's Housing Trust Fund for predevelopment costs for the proposed development. The four-to-five-story development — to be built in the 100 block of E. Reed Avenue — includes 77 apartments comprised of one-, two- and three-bedroom units. All will offer rents affordable to households with incomes at or below 60 percent of the area’s median income level. Jurisdictions strike deal on two-phase plan to bring streetcars to the Route 1 corridor.
Alexandria City Council and the Arlington County Board both moved Saturday to work in partnership to bring streetcars to the Route 1 corridor. The jurisdictions agreed that Arlington, in the first phase of the two-phase project, will begin planning for a Route 1 streetcar line in 2013 that will extend from Crystal City to its border with Alexandria in Potomac Yard. During this time, Alexandria will continue work to finalize the proposed new Potomac Yard Metro station. Alexandria will then begin the streetcar project’s second phase in 2014 by pursuing environmental and alternatives studies to assess the conversion of its portion of the Route 1 transitway from buses to streetcars. Projects officials to discuss Route 1 BRT on Wednesday night at Cora Kelly Recreation Center.
The City of Alexandria will hold a public meeting to discuss the implementation of a Bus Rapid Transitway along Route 1 at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cora Kelly Recreation Center. The BRT will consist of exclusive bus transit lanes in the median of Route 1 between Potomac Avenue and E. Glebe Road. The transitway is being done in partnership with Arlington County, with the line eventually ending at Pentagon City. The northbound lanes of Route 1 are currently being expanded. To create the BRT, the existing northbound lanes will be repurposed. Within the Alexandria segment, the transitway will have seven stops—three on the northbound side and four on the southbound side. A 'confused' woman slowly drove around clubhouse and along golf course for about 15 minutes before leading police on Route 1 pursuit into Alexandria.
A Fairfax County police chase involving a female suspect began on the grounds of the Belle Haven Country Club and ended on Route 1 near Potomac Yard Shopping Center in Alexandria on Tuesday afternoon. Police were called to the Belle Haven Country Club just after 2 p.m. after reports of a woman in a Toyota stationwagon driving around the clubhouse, according to FCPD Officer Don Gotthardt. Officers attempted to stop the woman, but the suspect exited, turning onto Fort Hunt Road and then driving northbound on Route 1 into Alexandria. "As far as I know there were two (police units) involved directly" in the pursuit, Gotthardt said. "And there's any number that could have followed but were not actively involved in the pursuit." Well, you may want to amend the comment a little more to include that parking over top of / outside of the lines that designate parking spaces on city streets such as those seen on Mt Vernon Ave between Hume and E Uhler as well as between E Del Ray and E Windsor (though not on both sides to the street) will increase your chances of being ticketed... even if the box ends before the outside curb … more ›
