Cash, iPad Stolen During VeloCity Break-in

Bicycle nonprofit is third Del Ray shop to suffer theft in January.

An iPad and cash were stolen from VeloCity Bicycle Cooperative on Mount Vernon Avenue during a break-in that is believed to have occurred Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, according to VeloCity cofounder Christian Myers. The Mount Vernon shop is the headquarters for the nonprofit, which educates community members about bike maintenance, safety and other issues. Used bikes are refurbished at sold at the shop.  Myers said he uses the iPad to make credit card transactions. The cash was stolen from the shop’s register. Myers said he did not notice any signs of a break-in until he opened the register to make a transaction on Wednesday. Part of the reason to leave it in overnight is so the morning manager/staff can make the deposit at the bank instead of someone carrying a lot of cash out of the building at night after they close. I'm not saying that is what happened here but I have worked in a number of restaurants in my life where this was the case. Granted, we normally at least put it into a safe overnight.   more ›

Police Investigate Robbery at TD Bank

Bank on South Washington Street was robbed Sunday afternoon.

TD Bank in Old Town Alexandria was robbed Sunday and Alexandria police have asked the public to offer any information that could help solve the case. A man entered TD Bank at 119 S. Washington St. around 3:48 p.m., handed the teller a note implying a weapon and demanded money. The teller relinquished an undisclosed amount of cash and the suspect fled the bank. No one was injured, according to a police statement. The suspect is described as a black male with a beard and approximately 6-foot-1 with a medium build. He was wearing a dark, hooded jacket, blue jeans and light-colored shoes. this bank has been robbed for years. I remember back in the 70's or 80's riding the bus back to rosemont from Lyles Crouch as the bus driver shouted out "oh my, they are robbing the United Bank (or whatever it was) and he's got a gun!" Police Seek Help Identifying Robbery Suspects

Two male suspects allegedly involved with Oct. 30 robbery of Kenmore Avenue 7-Eleven.

The Alexandria Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying suspects they believe were involved in the robbery last month of a 7-Eleven located at 4610 Kenmore Ave. At 3:17 a.m. Oct. 30, two suspects entered the business, police said. One of them jumped over the counter and grabbed the store’s clerk. The suspect displayed a handgun and held the clerk while the other suspect went for the cash register. The suspects then pushed the clerk to the ground and ran out of the store. The clerk was not seriously injured, according to the police. One suspect is described as a dark-skinned black man standing between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-11 and weighing 160 to 180 pounds. He was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled …

Updated: Police Respond to Attempted Robbery at Monroe Avenue CVS

Incident occurred late Tuesday morning.

2:25 p.m. update — The CVS incident is being categorized as an "attempted strong arm robbery," according to Alexandria Police Department spokesperson Jody Donaldson. "[The] suspect reached over the counter and attempted to take cash from the drawer but was unsuccessful," Donaldon wrote in an email.
