"Mango" Mike Anderson says new sushi spot will be exclusively for the 18-and-over crowd.
The folks behind Pork Barrel BBQ and Holy Cow will round out their restaurant trilogy in the 2300 block of Mount Vernon Avenue with an R-rated sushi bar. “Mango” Mike Anderson tells Patch he and his partners are installing furnishings and meeting regularly with a sushi consultant in preparing to open an 18-and-over sushi bar that will be advertised by a single, yet-to-be-determined Japanese character above the door. It was previously given the working title "Dragon." “When people call, the staff on the phone will just say ‘sushi bar,’” Anderson said. Details continue to be sorted out, but Anderson said the bar will include more than 20 different kinds of sake. He installed a “SOON” sign in the windows of the space last week. The 18-and-…

Teenager finds his groove dancing to dubstep.
If you’ve been out and about in Del Ray any time in the last year, chances are you’ve seen Rayvonne Lewis. The tall, skinny teenager is a regular in the heart of busy Mount Vernon Avenue, where he is often seen dancing by himself on the brick sidewalk near Holy Cow and Pork Barrel BBQ. His music of choice is dubstep, an electronic genre defined by its wobble bass. Sometimes Lewis wears headphones so only he can hear the pulsating “wub.” Other times he unplugs his headphones so people on the street can hear the music. But the tunes are secondary to Lewis, who has delighted neighborhood children and adults alike with his gangly, robotic moves—even if he’s only practicing. “I like the fact that that when I’m moving to the beat I can get …

Tree will be recycled by the city's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services.
On Monday, members of the Del Ray Business Association and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne took down the 800-pound holiday tree in the farmers market lot at the corner of Mount Vernon and E. Oxford avenues. The tree was donated by “Mango” Mike Anderson and Bill Blackburn of Pork Barrel BBQ and Holy Cow restaurants. It was plucked from a farm in Maryland. A crane was needed to install the tree in early December and a cherry picker was used decorate the arbor. “We owe Bill Blackburn and Mike Anderson such big thanks for all they did from start to finish,” DRBA officer Gayle Reuter said. On Monday, Anderson, Blackburn and other DRBA members pulled the tree over and snipped some of its branches. An inmate detail from the Sheriff's Office was called in …

The Mayan calendar turns over on Friday and the folks at Pork Barrel are throwing a party.
The world probably will not end Friday, but that’s not stopping some people from preparing—or partying. The Mayan calendar turns over Friday, which also happens to be the first day of winter. Some people believe this will be the start of the end of the world. The date even has its own website and one NASA scientist told CurrentTV there may be 25 million people in the United States who believe the end of the world will happen. In response, Pork Barrel BBQ on Mount Vernon Avenue is hosting an End of the World Party from 9 p.m. to close on Friday. The event will include a “Last Supper” special available from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for $14.95. The evening will also include games, prizes, party music and a confession box that was the brainchild of …

Pork Barrel BBQ restaurateurs preparing new burger venture with a charitable arm.
The folks behind Pork Barrel BBQ are preparing to open their next restaurant venture called “Holy Cow, Del Ray’s Gourmet Burger Joint.” Bill Blackburn promises—with a nod to the barbecue’s delayed opening—the fast-casual burger spot located next the The Dairy Godmother on Mount Vernon Avenue will open before the end of the year. Holy Cow will offer natural Angus burgers, potato and sweet potato fries, shakes, beer, wine and sodas. Other menu items include Quinoa veggie burgers, turkey burgers and chicken breast sandwiches. Blackburn said the restaurant did some rigorous taste-testing to come with a fry recipe “unlike anything else.” He said the restaurant will have a dedicated gluten-free fryer. The working menu includes 10 different …
