Local TV Covers Del Ray's Adult-Only Sushi Spot

WUSA 9 and WJLA 7 both run news pieces about the restaurant Wednesday evening.

Local television news crews descended on Del Ray Wednesday for reports on the neighborhood’s soon-to-open, 18-and-over sushi restaurant. Del Ray Patch first reported on plans for the restaurant in the 2300 block of Mount Vernon Avenue on April 9. • See: Preparations Underway for Upscale Sushi Bar in Del Ray “Mango” Mike Anderson and his partners have hired a sushi chef and are preparing to open the bar in mid-May. The restaurant currently has a Facebook page. WUSA 9 ran a report on the restaurant during its 5 p.m. Wednesday newscast (the video is available above). Preparations Underway for Upscale Sushi Bar in Del Ray

"Mango" Mike Anderson says new sushi spot will be exclusively for the 18-and-over crowd.

The folks behind Pork Barrel BBQ and Holy Cow will round out their restaurant trilogy in the 2300 block of Mount Vernon Avenue with an R-rated sushi bar. “Mango” Mike Anderson tells Patch he and his partners are installing furnishings and meeting regularly with a sushi consultant in preparing to open an 18-and-over sushi bar that will be advertised by a single, yet-to-be-determined Japanese character above the door. It was previously given the working title "Dragon." “When people call, the staff on the phone will just say ‘sushi bar,’” Anderson said. Details continue to be sorted out, but Anderson said the bar will include more than 20 different kinds of sake. He installed a “SOON” sign in the windows of the space last week. The 18-and-…

Holy Cow Staff Does the 'Harlem Shake' [VIDEO]

Employees and owners at Del Ray burger joint get silly and record dance video.

The “Harlem Shake” phenomena officially touched down in Del Ray on Tuesday when Holy Cow posted a video on YouTube of its staff, well, shaking. Co-owner Bill Blackburn said the employees had discussed making a “Harlem Shake” video for several weeks. They finally got around to recording one on Monday morning with the help of Dennis Belmont of Belmonster Creative. • For the quickest updates on Del Ray businesses, "like" Del Ray Patch on Facebook and follow @delraypatch on Twitter. “Del Ray needed a ‘Harlem Shake’ video,” Blackburn said. “Of all the restaurants in Del Ray, we’re the only one with a dancing busboy. So we figured there was no better staff to do it.” Rayvonne Lewis is Holy Cow’s dancing busboy. He frequently dances dub step …

Meet Rayvonne Lewis, Del Ray's Dancing Busboy [VIDEO]

Teenager finds his groove dancing to dubstep.

If you’ve been out and about in Del Ray any time in the last year, chances are you’ve seen Rayvonne Lewis. The tall, skinny teenager is a regular in the heart of busy Mount Vernon Avenue, where he is often seen dancing by himself on the brick sidewalk near Holy Cow and Pork Barrel BBQ. His music of choice is dubstep, an electronic genre defined by its wobble bass. Sometimes Lewis wears headphones so only he can hear the pulsating “wub.” Other times he unplugs his headphones so people on the street can hear the music. But the tunes are secondary to Lewis, who has delighted neighborhood children and adults alike with his gangly, robotic moves—even if he’s only practicing.   “I like the fact that that when I’m moving to the beat I can get …

Del Ray Holiday Tree Comes Down

Tree will be recycled by the city's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services.

On Monday, members of the Del Ray Business Association and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne took down the 800-pound holiday tree in the farmers market lot at the corner of Mount Vernon and E. Oxford avenues. The tree was donated by “Mango” Mike Anderson and Bill Blackburn of Pork Barrel BBQ and Holy Cow restaurants. It was plucked from a farm in Maryland. A crane was needed to install the tree in early December and a cherry picker was used decorate the arbor. “We owe Bill Blackburn and Mike Anderson such big thanks for all they did from start to finish,” DRBA officer Gayle Reuter said. On Monday, Anderson, Blackburn and other DRBA members pulled the tree over and snipped some of its branches. An inmate detail from the Sheriff's Office was called in …

Mango Mike’s to Stay Open Through Next Fall

The popular restaurant is renegotiating its lease.

Mango Mike’s, a West End restaurant and bar that dishes out Caribbean fare, will remain open through at least the fall of 2013, owner Mike Anderson told Patch. “There are a lot of rumors that were closing this week or the next, and I’d like to dispel those,” Anderson said. “ ... We’re definitely there until fall of next year, another great winter and summer season.” The restaurant’s lease, which is currently under negotiation, runs through fall of 2013, said Anderson, who said he is hoping for an extension on the lease. The restaurant is located at 4580 Duke St. Anderson first opened the East Port Raw Bar in 1994 in the building that now houses Los Toltectos, 4111 Duke St. In 1995 he converted it into the original Mango Mike’s. In 2000, …

Holy Cow Burger Joint to Open Before End of Year

Pork Barrel BBQ restaurateurs preparing new burger venture with a charitable arm.

The folks behind Pork Barrel BBQ are preparing to open their next restaurant venture called “Holy Cow, Del Ray’s Gourmet Burger Joint.” Bill Blackburn promises—with a nod to the barbecue’s delayed opening—the fast-casual burger spot located next the The Dairy Godmother on Mount Vernon Avenue will open before the end of the year. Holy Cow will offer natural Angus burgers, potato and sweet potato fries, shakes, beer, wine and sodas. Other menu items include Quinoa veggie burgers, turkey burgers and chicken breast sandwiches. Blackburn said the restaurant did some rigorous taste-testing to come with a fry recipe “unlike anything else.” He said the restaurant will have a dedicated gluten-free fryer. The working menu includes 10 different …

Curtain Goes Up On Pork Barrel BBQ

Restaurant sells out of barbecue in less than four hours.

Fifteen minutes before the much-awaited opening of the Pork Barrel BBQ restaurant on Tuesday, a line formed outside the entrance on Mt. Vernon Avenue. When the doors opened at 5 p.m., the line moved to the counter, where patrons ordered their food cafeteria style before finding their seats. The line remained for several of hours until about 8:30 p.m. when all the meat prepared for the evening had been ordered and promptly devoured. “As expected, the Del Ray Community came out in force as they have from Day 1. We’re very appreciative of that,” said co-owner “Mango” Mike Anderson. With familiar neighborhood faces such as Stu Ellis behind the bar and chef Will Artley in the kitchen, the opening night of Pork Barrel BBQ was a resounding …

Del Ray Prepares For Tree Lighting

Pork Barrel BBQ contributes large community tree.

Mt. Vernon Avenue is looking ready for the holidays following the work of volunteers who adorned street-sign posts with garlands and ribbons over the weekend. The Avenue is getting dolled up for Friday evening’s holiday tree lighting and luminaries ceremony, presented by the Del Ray Business Association at 6 p.m. in the farmers market lot. The men behind the Pork Barrel BBQ restaurant—which is expected to open Tuesday—recently contributed a tree for the ceremony, one that is much larger than previous versions. “Last year, they looked over and felt the community and kids needed a much bigger tree to light so they promised to get one this year,” DRBA officer Gayle Reuter wrote in an email. “[Pork Barrel BBQ’s] Mike [Anderson] rented a …
