Democratic Council Candidates Offer Visions for the City

The 14 candidates debate for the last time before the June 12 primary.

Alexandria’s 14 Democratic candidates squared off once again shoulder-to-shoulder at the final Alexandria Democratic Committee debate before the June 12 primary. Candidates expressed concern with challenges faced by many jurisdictions in Northern Virginia—education, fiscal responsibility, transportation and traffic, density and development, infrastructure and affordable housing, among other topics. Sorenson Institute Executive Director Bob Gibson moderated the panel at George Washington Middle School before a packed house that spilled over into the auditorium’s balcony. Volunteers Chip In at Community Lodgings

Economic Opportunities Commission held its "All Hands on Deck" day Saturday.

The Alexandria Economic Opportunities Commission held its “All Hands on Deck” public service day on Saturday at the Community Lodgings facilities in Arlandria. Volunteers painted and cleaned the interior of Community Lodgings buildings and performed some exterior landscaping work as well. The nonprofit works to lift families from homelessness and instability to independence through temporary housing options and adult education programs. The EOC secured funding for Saturday’s project from businesses and private donations. Schools, Development Top Issues During ADC Debate

All fourteen Democratic candidates participate in the first of two forums put on by the Alexandria Democratic Committee.

The Alexandria Democratic Committee held the first of two City Council candidate debates Wednesday night at Francis Hammond Middle School. Bob Gibson, executive director of the Sorensen Institute at the University of Virginia, served as moderator. The rapid-fire debate format gave all 14 candidates a chance to address a variety of topics and even ask questions to each other. The candidates are squarring off for six nominations that will be determined June 12 in a citywide primary. Hepburn Joins Alexandria City Council Race

West End resident Michael Hepburn is the 13th Democrat to declare candidacy.

Democrat Michael Hepburn officially announced his candidacy for Alexandria City Council in a statement released Monday morning. Before coming to a decision about his candidacy, the West End resident conducted a listening tour of the city over the last six months. Last week, Hepburn told the Alexandria Democratic Committee he was likely to enter the race but wanted to talk it over with his family over the weekend. “Every person in our city deserves to have an opportunity to be successful and our government plays a vital role in making sure that opportunity is not just a dream but it is a reality for all of our residents,” Hepburn wrote in his statement. Feld Joins City Council Race

Melissa Feld, mother of two Maury Elementary School students, is the 12th Democrat to announce their candidacy.

Melissa Feld became the 12th Democrat to jump into the Alexandria City Council race on Monday night. Feld, who lives on Russell Road, announced her decision at a meeting of the Alexandria Democratic Committee at Minnie Howard School. “I just think it’s time for new blood,” Feld told Patch. A former staffer for U.S. Sens. Al Franken (D-Minn.) and Carl Levin (D-Mich.), Feld is currently a principal with Power Based Associates, an organization that specializes in performing research and corporate intelligence for various organizations and companies. We should be cutting, not raising taxes. Look how much we pay for our schools and how much of a mess that is. Throwing money at is not the problem. First responders who excel should be given bonuses as has been proposed and we can offset those bonuses by cutting things that are not working and taking on pro growth policies (like the waterfront development).
