Public transit patrons donated toys in a collection effort for Community Partners for Children at the King Street Metro
DASH bus and Metro riders donated toys for children at the King Street Metro entrance during the last two weeks. DASH representatives stationed themselves at the Metro entrance, accepting gifts for children and giving out 2GB customized King Street Trolley and DASH USB memory sticks to riders. Milton Rojas of the Bicycle Pro Shop donated a dozen tricycles to the collection effort. Alexandria Transit donated hundreds of DASH coloring books and crayons to Community Partners for Children. “We are very excited about the response we received from our customers and proud to be partners with the CPC in their annual holiday donation drive,” said ATC General Manager Sandy Modell in a statement. “It is a wonderful feeling to give something back to …

If it seems like you're always waiting for a train at King Street or Braddock Road Metro stations, you're not alone. According to a report from Metro, the Blue Line performed the worst in terms of meeting on-time goals, WTOP reports. The report tracked on-time performance for all of Metro's train lines from April 2011 to March 2012. Trains on the Blue Line were on schedule 88.2 percent of the time, falling short of the average Metro line performance of 90.2 percent on time. The Orange Line performed best at 92.6 percent on time. The Red Line was second-worst with 89.5 percent on-time. In March, Metro reported that the Blue Line's Franconia-Springfield station had more crimes than any other station in Virginia.

King Street Metro will be called King St-Old Town beginning with the June 2012 map.
The Metro Board on Thursday approved name changes for several Metro stations, including changing King Street to King St-Old Town. Primary station names can be 19 characters. The board exempted some station names from that limit because "customers have strong familiarity with the existing names." Those exemptions include Franconia-Springfield. Additionally, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport remains unchanged. The King Street name change will cost between $90,000 and $120,000, mainly to replace signage and create new maps. The funding will not come from the city’s general fund. Instead, it will come from the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission allocation the city receives annually to pay for a portion of its Metro needs. …

The Washington area's transit authority is mulling over changing some names at Metro stations, but says King Street is a role model in the name game.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has been considering shortening or changing some Metro station names, but so far the King Street station will remain intact. WMATA held focus groups recently on current and proposed station names. Participants generally agreed that they like their station names short and sweet. That means changes are likely in store for stops such as Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan. One option considered by a focus group was changing the King Street station name to Old Town or Old Town-King Street, but WMATA spokesman Dan Stessel said, "There's no plans in the works to change that name. King Street is short. It fits within the guidelines that we’re hoping to define." However, Virginia members of WMATA's …

This is a completely non-news. The range in on-time performance between the worst and best on time performance for the 5 lines is 88.2 and 92.6 percent. I'm sorry... that's not meaningfully different. These data support that no line is at a disadvantage relative to the other lines.   more ›
