Evening Star Cafe Launches Patio Pop-Up Called 'The Front Porch'

New outdoor spot featuring special menu of light, summer-centric dishes.

Evening Star Cafe on Mount Vernon Avenue is launching a new pop-up restaurant Wednesday evening called The Front Porch that is located on a new patio between Planet Wine and the Exotic Planterium and Card and Comic Collectorama. Chef Jim Jeffords has created a menu of coastal and backyard barbecue selections for the pop-up, including light, summer-centric dishes. Thanksgiving Recipe: Sweet Potato Gratin

Evening Star Cafe Executive Chef Jim Jeffords offers his Turkey Day side dish recipe.

With Thanksgiving coming up Thursday, many folks around Del Ray are looking for a special recipe to liven up their Turkey Day feast. Jim Jeffords, the executive chef at Evening Star Cafe, offered up his recipe for Sweet Potato Gratin that’s currently on the menu at the Star:  Sweet Potato Gratin Evening Star Cafe Executive Chef Jim Jeffords Serves 6 Ingredients Process Assembly  Using a casserole dish, make one layer of sweet potatoes covering the bottom of the dish. Next, take half the kale and layer over top the potatoes and then sprinkle the roast garlic mixture on top of the kale. Just received this clarification: "So when you cut the garlic horizontally in half, the cloves will be split and you are just rubbing a little olive oil on there for the roasting process. When you are sautéing the garlic for the kale, you are using raw garlic from the other half that you did not roast. Yes, you should remove the kale from the stems after cleaning it and then dicing it."   more ›

Jeffords Aims to Please with Lowcountry Boil at Evening Star Cafe

Saturday block party will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Evening Star Cafe Executive Chef Jim Jeffords has assembled an impressive list of ingredients for Saturday’s lowcountry boil block party. To start, there’s the order of 210 pounds of crawfish that’s expected to arrive from Louisiana sometime on Friday. Then there’s 200 pounds of Andouille sausage, 200 pounds of corn and 100 pounds of shrimp. Oh, and lots of potatoes, too. “We’ve been piping out the sausage after service hours,” Jeffords said. All the ingredients will be thrown into pots, seasoned and cooked until the chef has it just where he wants. Renovated Evening Star Cafe To Reopen Wednesday

Jeffords named new chef at Del Ray eatery.

Evening Star Cafe will reopen for dinner Wednesday with new chef Jim Jeffords overseeing the kitchen. Jeffords, 30, comes to Del Ray after spending four years with chef Eric Ziebold at Cityzen in the District’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The Star, which is part of the Neighborhood Restaurant Group, parted ways with chef Will Artley prior to closing for renovations on Nov. 7. When the Mt. Vernon Avenue restaurant reopens Wednesday, customers will see an “updated but still funky and eclectic redesign of the space,” according to Megan Bailey, public relations director for NRG. The overhaul has also yielded a renovated bar with new cocktail list and an expanded beer list featuring 20 drafts, including one cask. The selection will be curated by …
