Emma's Coffee Shop and Wine Bar Plans Fall Opening

Mother-daughter team of Connie and Jackie Desrosiers currently planning a menu, including beer and wine selections.

The mother-daughter team of Connie and Jackie Desrosiers is aiming for a fall opening of Emma’s, a new coffee and wine bar located at 106 Hume Ave. in Del Ray. Alexandria City Council approved plans for the establishment in January. Emma’s will open first as a coffee shop, then open the wine bar at a later date.  • See: Council OKs Emma's Coffee and Wine Spot. Local architect Bob Larson was hired to develop a working concept plan for Emma’s and remains on the project.  “We’re currently looking at contractors who will help us bring the property up from the dust,” Connie Desrosiers said. The Desrosiers said they’re hoping Emma’s (the name is a nod to the 1925 Emma P. Hume subdivision where the property resides) will attract a diverse crowd. …

Council OKs Emma's Coffee and Wine Spot

Hume Ave cafe will also offer soups, salads, sandwiches and cold plates.

A proposal to open a new coffee and wine bar on Hume Avenue received approval from Alexandria City Council on Saturday. The plan for Emma’s, located at 106 Hume Ave., calls for renovating an existing apartment building on the property, including the construction of a 954-square-foot addition. Two residential apartments will remain after the renovation, something owner Connie Desrosiers said would mitigate any noise concerns. “I need to keep my tenants happy,” said Desroisers, who put her business plan together with her daughter Jackie. At a Planning Commission meeting on Jan. 3, the cafe’s neighbor, Epiphany Productions, expressed worries the restaurant would generate noise impeding the consulting and fundraising firm’s ability to work as …

Planning Commission OKs Proposal for Emma's

Plans for the new Hume Avenue wine bar and cafe will now go before council.

A new coffee and wine bar on Hume Avenue in Del Ray moved one step closer to fruition last week when the Planning Commission approved the endeavor. Of 13 speakers who signed up to comment on the proposal put together by mother and daughter team Connie and Jackie Desrosiers, 12 were in support. "I think it will be a real asset to that end of Del Ray," said Connie Desrosiers. "We don't want to be a bar. It's a community gathering place," adding that there will be no amplified music. The old farmhouse site also includes two apartments above the proposed cafe. However, the planned cafe’s neighbor, Epiphany Productions, said while they favor small businesses in general, the new cafe will generate noise impeding their ability to work as well as …

Coffee and Wine Bar in the Works for Hume Avenue

Connie and Jackie Desrosiers are ramping up their efforts to open Emma's in early 2013.

A new coffee shop and wine bar is in the works on Hume Avenue, and the owner is optimistic it will be open for business early next year. Del Ray residents Connie Desrosiers and her daughter Jackie are ramping up their efforts to open a new restaurant at 106 E. Hume Avenue called Emma P. Hume, or Emma’s for short. The name is a nod to the 1925 Emma P. Hume subdivision where the property resides. Desrosiers plans to make a soft opening as a coffee house and then pursue the wine bar element with early evening hours at a later point. The establishment will have less than 40 total seats, including a few outside. The seven-year Del Ray resident said she had ruminated over her coffee house idea had for some time (she even attended Coffee Fest in …

Updated: Hume Avenue Fire Damage Could Have Been Much Worse

An Alexandria fire engine returned from receiving maintenance just a few hours before crews were called out to respond to a shed blaze in Del Ray.

Monday evening’s fire on Hume Avenue could have been much worse had Alexandria Fire Engine 209 not returned from being serviced just a few hours before responding to the shed blaze. The Alexandria Fire Department did not have a reserve engine to substitute in while the 209 Engine was out for repairs because of a temporary depletion in its fleet. The engine returned to Station 209 at Potomac Yard about two hours before crews were called to the Hume Avenue incident. Had the engine still been out for maintenance, the Station 209 crew would have responded to the incident in a Chevy Suburban. While they would have been able to combat the blaze, firefighters would have had to wait a few precious minutes for engines from the Cameron Mills Road or…

mg hit it right on the nail, the delay was caused by traffic not due to negligence of the AFD. These guys are consumate professionals, conscientious and dilligent in responding to calls. We need their services, and it really is a shame that the City is slow to provide their workers the tools necessary to do their job, most especially if it's a matter of life or death.   more ›
