Cinema Siren at Comic-Con: Through an Insider's Eyes

San Diego Comic-Con opens with huge crowds, swag and high hopes.

SAN DIEGO—Whenever "What is Comic-Con?" floats out into the air, it shocks Cinema Siren into speechlessness. San Diego Comic-Con, (SDCC or just "Comic-Con" for those in the know), is the largest gathering for entertainment and pop culture in the world, and happens in San Diego every July at this time.  It garners so much press coverage and we at ArtInsights have so many friends and colleagues whose livelihoods depend on a successful SDCC, it's hard for me to imagine anyone still in the dark about its existence. The geeks of the world know all about it. One certainly can't wander into an Apple Store, for example, and have any of the employees not give great sighs and groans when one informs them one is going to Comic-Con… So, as the 39th …

Love your insight on SDCC, Leslie! I always think, "I would LOVE to go to that some day," but reading about the crowds makes me think perhaps I'd just rather live it vicariously through you. :) Have fun and tell Michael I say hi!   more ›

Amalgamated Classic Clothing and Dry Goods to Open Saturday

Vintage clothing store in Del Ray offers unique fashion options and other finds.

Carrying everything from Edwardian-era dresses to “Mad Men” suits from the 1960s, Amalgamated Classic Clothing and Dry Goods promises to offer distinct fashions and other items that can’t be found anywhere else in Alexandria. Shelley White, who operates the vintage clothing store with partner Gene Elm, said she’s planning to open the shop located at 1904 Mt. Vernon Avenue (next to Contessa's) at 11 a.m. Saturday. White and Elm have rented constumes to several film and stage productions while working out of a facility in South Arlington. When looking to open a retail shop, White said she has always been a fan of Del Ray. The Arlington resident’s kids have attended the Del Ray School of Rock and take lessons at Rock of Ages Music located …

Awesome! I love Current Boutique in Courthouse and Old Town and am thrilled to see something similar arrive in Del Ray, something with a bit of spunk to it (and not another restaurant). Nice to see it has mens clothes as well. Can't wait to shop there.   more ›

Where to Beat the Heat

With area temperatures rising, it's important to know where and how to stay cool.

Temperatures in Alexandria will continue to climb through the 90s and may hit 100 by the end of this week, according to local weather forecasters. High humidity may make the outside temperature seem even hotter. Wednesday’s temperatures will be in the low- to mid-90s, but it will feel close to 100 by late afternoon. The D.C. metro area could see record-breaking heat on Thursday and Friday, as temperatures climb up above 95 with high humidity. The record high temperature for Thursday is 104 degrees and for Friday is 103 degrees—both set in 1926 near the area that is now Ronald Reagan National Airport. Temperatures will cool back into the lower 90s for Saturday and Sunday.  The overnight hours will only bring limited relief, with …
