American Cancer Society fundraiser begins Saturday afternoon and will run through the night.
Alexandria is hosting its first-ever Relay For Life event Saturday, May 18 into Sunday, May 19 at George Washington Middle School in Del Ray. The event, which is hosted in different variations in more than 5,200 communities around the globe, raises money for the American Cancer Society. Following an opening ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday, relay teams will camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around the George Washington Middle School grounds. Special laps recognizing cancer survivors and caregivers will follow the ceremony. At least one member of each team will walk at all times, signifying that cancer never sleeps. T.C. Gonzaga tops Xavier in championship match.
The fourth annual Jesuit Rugby Classic brought hundreds of people to George Washington Middle School in Del Ray on Saturday and Sunday for one of the nation's top high school rugby events. Gonzaga, the No. 3-ranked team in the country, upset top-ranked Xavier (N.Y.) 26-7 in the tournament's championship game. Gonzaga College High School Rugby Club of Washington, D.C. teamed with the city to organize the tournament, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Washington Jesuit Academy and the T.C. Williams Rugby Club. Players from high schools in Virginia, the District, Maryland, Connecticut, Ohio and New York participated in the event. Liam Davis-Wallace swam at the YMCA on Monroe Avenue, biked and ran laps around his block in Alexandria's Rosemont neighborhood to raise money for children and families in Somalia. Although he started out with a goal of raising about $1,000, he raised $2,908 through his UNICEF fundraising event page. He completed 44 laps in all Feb 24.

Smell linked to smoking power line across from the school on Mount Vernon Avenue.
4:30 p.m. update — George Washington Middle School students did not re-enter the school following its evacuation, according to several students' parents. — — — — Fire crews from Alexandria and Arlington County responded to a report of an odor at George Washington Middle School around 2 p.m. Thursday that was later found to be related to a snapped power line in the 1000 block of Mount Vernon Avenue. The odor prompted someone in the school to pull the fire alarm and the children were evacuated from the building, according to ACPS spokesperson Kelly Alexander. George Washington Middle School student Liam Davis-Wallace was thinking about bones. Not just any kind of bones, but human bones. He was thinking of human bones that might be lying around on the ground. It was unnerving. It was part of the curriculum at school to help students better understand international affairs. The Alexandria City Public Schools study unit is related to an event planned for June on the National Mall—One Million Bones, a collaborative art installation recognizing victims and survivors who have been killed or displaced by genocides in Somalia, Burma, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Boundary Stones blog shares story of Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath's 1965 pro debut at George Washington High School.
Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath opened his professional football career not at Shea Stadium in Queens, N.Y., but at the George Washington High School football stadium in Del Ray. Boundary Stones, a new local history blog from WETA dedicated to sharing interesting stories and historical nuggets about Virginia, Maryland the District, detailed the story behind the 1965 AFL preseason opener in a Thursday post. The game pitted Namath’s New York Jets against the Houston Oilers, who also had a Hall of Famer under center in George Blanda. Hall of Fame coach Weeb Ewbank was on the sidelines for the Jets. City is distributing sandbags at George Washington Middle School and intersection of King and Lee streets.
The city is making sandbags available for homes and businesses Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sandbags will be available at two locations: To get a sandbag, bring proof of residency such as a current driver’s license or utility bill. There is a limit of five bags per person. A high wind warning has been issued for Alexandria from 8 a.m. Monday to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Winds of more than 45 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph are possible. The high winds, coupled with heavy rain from Hurricane Sandy, may lead to significant tree damage and power outages. A flood watch is also in effect from late Sunday night through Tuesday evening.

Ana Humphrey and Mica DeSimone make donation for second time.
Ana Humphrey and Mica DeSimone, two sixth-graders at George Washington Middle School, lopped off a combined 22 inches of hair on Wednesday night for Wigs for Kids, an organization that provides free hair replacement and support to children who have lost their hair due to medical conditions or treatments. Solagé International Hair Salon, located at 221 N. Washington St., donated its services to the cause. The event marked the second time Humphrey and DeSimone donated their tresses. The girls first made the commitment when they were third-graders at Maury Elementary. At the time, they were joined by Laura Oetgen, their teacher. Mary Breslin spent part of summer break in special educators' program at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Mary Breslin, a teacher at George Washington Middle School, is starting up the school year with a newfound understanding of science, technology, engineering and math concepts after spending part of her summer in a research program at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Breslin worked with a team of scientists and fellow teachers to look at possible risks associated with orchard farming as part of an elite fellowship program arranged by the Siemens Foundation, Discovery Education, Oak Ridge Associated Universities and the College Board.
