Historic Alexandria candlelight tours are going to be even a little sweeter this year. The historic division of candy company Mars has teamed up with Historic Alexandria's candlelight tours this December to enable participants to sample chocolate while visiting Gadsby's Tavern, Carlyle House, Lee-Fendall House and the rarely open Bank of Alexandria at 133 N. Fairfax St. The special event is occurring for only one weekend. Tours will run from 6 p.m to 9 p.m. Dec. 8 and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 9. Three Alexandria museums are participating in the Smithsonian’s 8th annual Museum Day Live! celebrating education through museums and cultural institutions. On Sept. 29 Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, Alexandria Archaeology Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be offering free admission to anyone presenting a Museum Day Ticket. The ticket is available to download. Visitors who present the official pass will gain free admission for two people to participating museums and cultural venues. City's Office of Historic Alexandria has applied for its museum system to become accredited by the American Association of Museums.
The Office of Historic Alexandria got the go-ahead from City Council to move forward on its plan to have its entire museum system accredited. Council on Tuesday approved OHA’s five-year plan as an element required by the American Association of Museums’ accreditation process and authorized the city manager to execute any necessary and related documentation. Of the more than 17,500 museums in the United States, only about 4 percent are accredited and only about 1 percent of museum systems are accredited. The accreditation, which recognizes nationally recognized standards and best practices by the museum profession, would be valid for 15 years.
