Jong Lee ends his set at the Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market with a Skynyrd cover that flies off the rails.
The Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market, located at 4109 Mount Vernon Ave., frequently hosts live music in the late morning and early afternoon on Sundays as the market wraps up. This past Sunday, May 12, Alexandria singer and guitar player Jong Lee ended his set with a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird.” While it was by no means a rare cover, Lee incorporated a kazoo and some unique percussion accompaniment from his son into the song's coda. Oh, and the police got involved, too (no, not Sting). Just watch the video. The not-for-profit Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market is open Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October. It was the first market in Alexandria or Arlington County to employ the Supplemental Nutrition …

Arlandria market is open April through October on Sundays.
The Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market is gearing up to reopen April 14. The market is held in Four Mile Run Park in the 4100 block of Mount Vernon Avenue in Arlandria. It was the first market in Alexandria or Arlington County to employ the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-EBT “food stamp” program, which market managers can process for vendors on qualified products. ATM services are also available at the market. Last year, the Four Mile Run Market debuted its new performance stage. The stage was one part of the expansion and …

Market held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October in Four Mile Run Park.
The Alexandria Office of the Arts, in collaboration with the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, is seeking performing artists to play on the new stage at the Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market. The stage is just one part of the expansion and revitalization efforts at Four Mile Run Park, which hosts the market. The Alexandria Commission for the Arts provided funding for the outdoor stage at the Four Mile Run Park Community Building with grant money from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Last year, Alexandria received an anonymous $10,000 donation to be used exclusively toward revitalizing Four Mile Run Park, including the stage. The volunteer-run market is held near the north end of Mt. …

Farmers market managers specifically looking for a produce vendor.
The Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market is seeking new vendors, specifically a second produce vendor, for its Sunday market. The market recently lost the services of a produce vendor and managers would like to bring in a second one to complement the offerings from C and T Produce. “The current vendor is from the Fredericksburg area and it would ideally be good to have some balance and have one from the north,” said Kevin Beekman, a market manager at Four Mile. Beekman said he reached out to a produce vendor at the Del Ray Farmers’ Market, which is held on Saturdays at the corner of Mt. Vernon and E. Del Ray avenues, but was told the farm couldn’t “scale up” to meet the demand of two markets per weekend. The not-for-profit Four Mile …

Irish Breakfast Band and banjo player Bill Mansfield perform during Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market.
The Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market debuted its new performance stage—dubbed "4MRStage"—on Sunday morning with performances by the Irish Breakfast Band and banjo player Bill Mansfield. The 4MRStage isn't the only bandstand to recently debut in Arlandria…

Market organizers hope upgrades to Four Mile Run Park will improve operations.
The Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market opened its 2012 season Sunday in its recently refurbished spot in Four Mile Run Park. The gravel lot where the market was held is now a freshly paved plaza next to the Four Mile Run Park Community Building. The building has been outfitted with a stage for performances and community events and the area should soon receive new trees and more amenities. The new plaza allowed a larger space and new environment for the market. Instead of lining up in a small horseshoe, the vendors formed a straight line facing Mt. Vernon Avenue. “We think the upgrades to the park will make a dramatic improvement to the market we provide to our residents,” said market organizer Travis Hester. Eight vendors made it …

Park receives large donation for renovation efforts.
The Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market closed for the season with a bit of a bang on Sunday when it hosted some fun diversions to pair with its normal selection of fresh produce and other goodies. Will Artley, the former chef at Evening Star Cafe, stopped by around noon for a cooking demonstration. Artley prepared pumpkin french toast for market attendees and vendors. “I just want to show that there’s more you can do with pumpkin,” Artley said. The chef is currently taking some time off following his departure from Evening Star. While flipping toast, Artley spoke of recently upping his exercise regimen and making some time to kick back before figuring out his next culinary destination. Artley wasn’t the only attraction on Sunday: …
