Learn about Civil War reenactment.
Fort Ward Museum and Historic Site is presenting Civil War Recruiting Day — a perfect time to learn about Civil War reenacting. The free event will be held Feb. 9 when soldiers and civilians of the 3rd U.S. Regular Infantry, Company K, will be on hand between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to talk about period clothing and equipment, demonstrate drills, and explain the variety of roles that military and civilian interpreters can portray. Visitors can also inquire about how to join local reenactment units and learn what kind of clothing and equipment a novice reenactor requires. The snow date is Feb. 23. Alexandria Civil War site features a patriotic Santa Claus, living history interpreters, Victorian decorations, craft activities for children, and tours of the historic fort.
Fort Ward Museum is offering visitors the opportunity to learn how Christmas was observed during the Civil War by attending its annual "Christmas in Camp" open house. The family-oriented event on Dec. 8 from noon to 4 p.m. features a patriotic Santa Claus, living history interpreters, Victorian decorations, craft activities for children and tours of the fort. The suggested donation is $2 for adults and $1 for children. The program features a Civil War-era Santa Claus, based on a wartime image popularized by artist Thomas Nast, who will read "The Night Before Christmas" to children and listen to their Christmas wishes. City's Office of Historic Alexandria has applied for its museum system to become accredited by the American Association of Museums.
The Office of Historic Alexandria got the go-ahead from City Council to move forward on its plan to have its entire museum system accredited. Council on Tuesday approved OHA’s five-year plan as an element required by the American Association of Museums’ accreditation process and authorized the city manager to execute any necessary and related documentation. Of the more than 17,500 museums in the United States, only about 4 percent are accredited and only about 1 percent of museum systems are accredited. The accreditation, which recognizes nationally recognized standards and best practices by the museum profession, would be valid for 15 years.
