Street festival scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday along Mount Vernon Avenue.
Outdoor season officially kicks off in Del Ray this week with the return of First Thursday. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 2, folks are invited to head down to Mount Vernon Avenue for “Cirque du Del Ray: A Healthy Carnival” presented by the Del Ray Business Association. “Instead of a health fair, it’s a healthy carnival where kids and their families can come to participate in the fun of being healthy and active,” said event co-chair Megan Brown of Mind the Mat. Brown invites kids and adults to participate in a series of events that will be presented throughout the evening in the farmers market lot—redubbed “The Big Top”—at the corner of Mount Vernon and East Oxford avenues. Del Ray marked the final First Thursday of the year Thursday evening with a fun-filled celebration of fashion. Put on by the Del Ray Business Association, the street festival was part of a larger, international event called Fashion's Night Out, which was started by Vogue four years ago. More than 80 businesses and others have united to participate in the first Fashion’s Night Out Alexandria on Thursday, including a big to-do here in Del Ray. The final First Thursday street festival of the year will be part of the citywide celebration, with a multitude of events happening in Del Ray from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Special events include surprise VIP production numbers and an ongoing runway show at the Del Ray Farmers’ Market lot. Artist Linda Hesh will install 3,000 doorknob hangers in Del Ray and Potomac West for a temporary public art project in coordination with First Thursday.
When the Alexandria Commission for the Arts made an open call for a public art project, Linda Hesh’s proposal stood out for many reasons—not least of which was its potential to get people talking. “It’s a totally different kind of art than people are used to, and that’s exciting,” said Pat Miller, chair of the commission “It’s not a statue or something like that. Arts and crafts demonstrations needed for Aug. 2 street festival in Del Ray.
Organizers of the August First Thursday street festival are seeking artisans to demonstrate their craft during the event. The theme of the Aug. 2 festival is “Art Walk on the Avenue.” Organizers envision that different art events will take place in different places around Del Ray. The event will run along Mt. Vernon Avenue from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sara Bridwell, a member of the Special Events Committee of the Del Ray Business Association, said she is looking for artists and craftsman to demonstrate everything from beadwork to stringing a guitar. “We want them to share their art and artwork,” Bridwell said. “They can sell stuff if they want to, but that’s not the focus.
