With Thanksgiving coming up Thursday, many folks around Del Ray are looking for a special recipe to liven up their Turkey Day feast. Jim Jeffords, the executive chef at Evening Star Cafe, offered up his recipe for Sweet Potato Gratin that’s currently on the menu at the Star:  Sweet Potato Gratin Evening Star Cafe Executive Chef Jim Jeffords Serves 6 Ingredients Process Assembly  Using a casserole dish, make one layer of sweet potatoes covering the bottom of the dish. Next, take half the kale and layer over top the potatoes and then sprinkle the roast garlic mixture on top of the kale. Next, pour half of the béchamel sauce over the dish and then sprinkle half the grated parmesan cheese. Repeat this once more. For some added crunch, you can …

Just received this clarification: "So when you cut the garlic horizontally in half, the cloves will be split and you are just rubbing a little olive oil on there for the roasting process. When you are sautéing the garlic for the kale, you are using raw garlic from the other half that you did not roast. Yes, you should remove the kale from the stems after cleaning it and then dicing it."   more ›

Evening Star Cafe Receives Approval for New Patio

Del Ray restaurant will add 30 outdoor seats next to Planet Wine.

Evening Star Cafe is getting more outdoor seating. The Alexandria City Council approved a permit on Saturday to add 30 new outdoor seats in the patio area next to Planet Wine. Evening Star Cafe and Planet Wine, which both sit under the Neighborhood Restaurant Group umbrella, may install a retractable canopy or other shelter over the patio. NRG purchased the patio and the two buildings next to Planet Wine in 2011. Evening Star currently has 20 outdoor seats on the south side of the building. The addition of 30 seats on the north side would increase the total number at the restaurant and attached lounges to 150. The approved application included a requested parking reduction of 13 spaces. Speaking at the Alexandria Planning Commission …

Sarah, thank you for your sympathy. Sadly, it makes no difference if I park my car near the corner of Howell andLaGrand, further west on Howell, or on either side of LaGrande, the side ire mirrors are clipped off. Only one responsible party left a note and that was only because a neighbor whipped out his cell phone and took a picture of the car. I stress that ALL of these side view fatalities …   more ›

Evening Star to Celebrate 15th Anniversary with Weekend Celebration

Beginning Aug. 3, restaurant will host a dance party, barbecue, fundraiser for the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria and more.

Evening Star Cafe is celebrating its 15th anniversary next month with a weekend of special events featuring fun, food, drinks and a bit of toe tapping, too. In honor of the decade the Star opened its doors, the celebration will kickoff at 6 p.m. on Aug. 3 with a dance party in the No. 9 Lounge featuring hit tunes from the 1990s (Mark Morrison, anyone? Maybe 4 Non-Blondes? What about "a game of horseshoes?"). The bar will be stocked with complimentary snacks and specialty cocktails mixed by a guest bartender, who is described only as a blast from the past.  The dancing will be followed on Aug. 4 with a BBQ Block Party featuring live music from noon to 5 p.m. Chef Jim Jeffords is planning a menu that will feature ribs, housemade half-smokes …

Jeffords Aims to Please with Lowcountry Boil at Evening Star Cafe

Saturday block party will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Evening Star Cafe Executive Chef Jim Jeffords has assembled an impressive list of ingredients for Saturday’s lowcountry boil block party. To start, there’s the order of 210 pounds of crawfish that’s expected to arrive from Louisiana sometime on Friday. Then there’s 200 pounds of Andouille sausage, 200 pounds of corn and 100 pounds of shrimp. Oh, and lots of potatoes, too. “We’ve been piping out the sausage after service hours,” Jeffords said. All the ingredients will be thrown into pots, seasoned and cooked until the chef has it just where he wants. A Georgia native, Jeffords took over the kitchen at the renovated Evening Star Cafe seven months ago. The seafood boil is a fun, social tradition he wanted to share in the neighborhood. “It’s a…

Taste of Del Ray Brings Out the Masses

Del Ray Pizzeria and Evening Star Cafe take top awards at 2012 Taste of Del Ray.

Residents of the Del Ray community and beyond came out with a hunger like no other Sunday for the fourth annual Taste of Del Ray. “Tickets for entrance to the Taste of Del Ray went extremely fast today,” said Gayle Reuter, a board member with Del Ray Business Association. With ideal weather conditions, the number of attendees exceeded the 1,000 mark with ease, Reuter said. She estimated that this year’s turnout in the parking lot behind the Virginia Commerce Bank surpassed previous totals, noting that the DRBA had to stop selling tickets in order to ensure that paid entrants would get their money's (and tummy's) worth. With celebrity judge Rock Harper on hand, a dozen local eateries went toe-to-toe vying for top positions in two categories…

I love the location of the market and the fact that on Saturday's it is the gathering place in the heart of the neighborhood. The market master has done a great job of organizing the market and working with both the farmers and the community groups that come out year round. Having worked many tables at the market over the years, the crowds tend to come between 9-10 a.m -- come before or after to …   more ›

More Pop-up Restaurants in Del Ray?

According to a Northern Virginia Magazine report, the Neighborhood Restaurant Group is considering sprucing up the former Barkley Square patio for a rotating lineup of pop-up restaurants.

Neighborhood Restaurant Group owner Michael Babin is considering hosting month-long pop-up restaurants featuring NRG chefs in the patio space in front of the former Barkley Square building, according to Northern Virginia Magazine. Babin is considering building a utility kitchen “in a small building in the back of the patio” and filling the patio with picnic tables and covering them with a retractable awning, according to the report published Wednesday on the magazine’s Gut Check blog. No word if the “small building” is the Barkley Square space. Babin purchased several of the buildings in the 2000 block of Mt. Vernon Avenue last year, including those that held his Evening Star Cafe and Planet Wine as well as the Barkley Square building and …

Evening Star Cafe is resuming lunch service on Friday. At least for now, the restaurant will be serving lunch only on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., according to Neighborhood Restaurant Group Public Relations Director Megan Bailey. While Evening Star used to be a favorite, I am Sorry to Report, that my recent dinner there was disappointing! The duck was a very small portion and the rest of the food was average. The best item was the bread. And, the noise was unbearable--and there's no need for blaring background music because the acoustic ambience is already LOUD!! Absolutely impossible to have a dinner conversation. …   more ›

Artley Takes Over at Pizzeria Orso in Falls Church

Former Evening Star Cafe chef now baking authentic Neapolitan pizzas.

Will Artley, the former chef at Evening Star Cafe and purveyor of February’s Project 2312 pop-up restaurant, has landed a new full-time gig in Falls Church. The chef is now making Neapolitan pies at Pizzeria Orso, located just off Route 29 at 400 S. Maple Ave. Tom Sietsema of The Washington Post recently wrote of Artley’s transition to the pizzeria on the newspaper’s Going Out Gurus blog. Monday marked Artley’s first day at Orso, which was named "Best Upscale Pizza" in Washingtonian Magazine's annual "Best of Washington" issue. Orso’s owners recently sent Artley to Marina del Rey, Calif., for instruction on how to make authentic Neapolitan pizza—something that came very naturally to Artley, according to Sietsema’s blog post. After parting …
