Grand Jury Indicts Johnson in Del Ray Murder Case

Marie Maybell Johnson is facing charges of murder, attempted arson and destruction of property.

A circuit court grand jury has indicted Marie Maybell Johnson in the murder of 94-year-old Del Ray resident Elmer Roehrs.  Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Sengel said his office presented its case against Johnson to the grand jury during its regular session on Monday. Burglary and grand larceny charges against Marie Maybell Johnson, a suspect in the Feb. 13 murder of Del Ray resident Elmer “Joe” Roehrs, are going to an Alexandria Circuit Court grand jury. Chief Judge Becky J. Not specific to this, but a similar question was posed to Capt. Odgen and Det. Goble at the DRCA meeting last week: how long does it take to arrest someone after a warrant issues? Paraphrasing, they said it depends. It is much faster when someone has a known address or workplace or known associates. Additional information about the murder of 94-year-old Elmer “Joe” Roehrs, found dead Wednesday in his Holly Street home, has come forward through various television media reports. Patch reported Friday that Marie Maybell Johnson, arrested Thursday morning for a November 2012 burglary at Roehrs’ home, is likely to be charged with Roehrs’ murder. NBC 4 reports that Johnson was the only person seen on security cameras entering and leaving Roehrs’ Holly Street home the day of the murder. The home has a history of break-ins and Roehrs and his family installed the cameras at the house after it became a frequent target. An Alexandria police investigation into the murder is ongoing. Marie Maybell Johnson will likely be charged with the murder of Elmer Roehrs, a 94-year-old Del Ray man who was found dead inside his Holly Street home on Wednesday evening, according to sources with information about the Alexandria police investigation. Johnson was arrested early Thursday morning in connection to a burglary that happened at Roehrs’ house on Nov. 27, 2012. She was picked up during a traffic stop on Duke Street in Old Town. Roehrs' Death Now Considered a Homicide

Holly Street resident was found dead early Wednesday evening in his home.

The death of Del Ray resident Elmer Roehrs is now being considered a homicide by the Alexandria Police Department following the results of an autopsy performed Thursday. The 94-year-old was killed Wednesday evening in his home in the 2700 block of Holly Street in Del Ray. Police initially classified the case as a “suspicious death,” but did say Roehrs suffered trauma to his upper body. According to a myfoxdc.com report, Roehrs was killed during an apparent burglary or robbery. An investigation into the case continues. Police identified Roehrs as the victim late Thursday morning.
