Alexandria Democrats to Host 2013 Legislative Review

Richmond representatives to discuss upcoming changes to state laws.

The Alexandria Democratic Committee will host a 2013 Legislative Review session with all five elected officials who represent Alexandria in the Virginia State Capitol at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, at George Washington Middle School on Mount Vernon Avenue.    State Sens. Dick Saslaw (D-35th), George Barker (D-39th) and Adam Ebbin (D-30th) along with Dels. Charniele Herring (D-46th) and Rob Krupicka (D-45th) will discuss the 2013 session and upcoming changes to state laws. Attendees will also be given an opportunity “to talk to their elected officials about what’s important to them and the local community,” according to a press release. GOP-Led Proposal Would Move Sens. Barker, Saslaw Out of Alexandria

If the senate's redistricting proposal passes the House of Delegates and is signed into law, Sen. Adam Ebbin would become Alexandria's only state senator.

Monday night’s Republican-led effort to redistrict Virginia's state senate would push Alexandria voters out of the districts of Virginia Sens. George Barker (D-39th) and Dick Saslaw (D-35th). The changes, which were introduced as an amendment to a larger bill late Monday, are awaiting House approval and would take effect in 2015. However, Democrats, including Barker, said the move is unconstitutional at best. Republicans called the redistricting attempt "an effort to create another majority black Senate district." It comes two years after Gov. Bob McDonnell signed the state's traditional redistricting plan, crafted every 10 years with census data in years that end in "1." However, introducing yet another plan is unconstitutional, Senate …

I suspect that Governor McDonnell will veto this bill because he has aspirations beyond Virginia and this looks very, very bad.   more ›

State Lawmakers Field Questions from Alexandrians at City Hall

Public comment largely centered on voting rights and health care issues.

State legislators convened at Alexandria City Hall last week to hear public comment on hot topics for their constituents, which included health care and voting rights with various other topics peppered throughout the discussion. Senators Adam Ebbin, D-30; George Barker, D-39; and Dick Saslaw, D-35; along with Delegates Rob Krupicka, D-45, and Charniele Herring, D-46, answered audience questions during the event, hosted by the League of Women Voters. There seemed to be a rare general consensus among the lawmakers and the speakers — mostly senior citizens — on the topic of health care that Virginia should set up a health care exchange. Citizens said the state should establish its own set of regulated health care plans before the federal …

Its too bad that your reporter left out one of the major legislative proposals that I spoke to at the meeting with our delegates to Richmond, i.e. that all nursing homes have a working generator when there is a power outage. After talking with Vice Mayor Donley, I was able to get attached to this bill that all mid-rise/high rise apartment buildings have one elevator that is operational when there…   more ›

State Senators Back Silberberg in Council Race

Democrat Allison Silberberg kicked off her Alexandria City Council campaign Sunday at Los Tios.

Alexandria City Council candidate Allison Silberberg (D) picked up endorsements Sunday from three state senators from past and present at her campaign kickoff at Los Tios in Del Ray. State Sens. Dick Saslaw (D-35th) and Adam Ebbin (D-30th) threw their support behind Silberberg, as did Patsy Ticer, a former Alexandria mayor and Ebbin’s predecessor in the state house. “[Silberberg] will consider what she is going to say and what she means by what she says, and then she will say it,” Ticer said. A Dallas native, Silberberg moved to Alexandria in 1989 and has lived in Parkfairfax since 1992. She has served on Alexandria's Economic Opportunities Commission since 2004 and has been the chair of the group since 2010. During her remarks, Silberberg…
