Multitude of New Crosswalks Coming to East Del Ray

Installations aimed at combating cut-through traffic and improving pedestrian safety.

Click on the dots on the map above for information about the specifications of new and refurbished crosswalks in Del Ray. — — — — The Del Ray Citizens Association approved the installation of dozens of new crosswalks between Mount Vernon Avenue and Route 1 at its membership meeting Monday night. The new crosswalks are aimed at combating cut-through traffic—including trucks and speeding vehicles—between the two thoroughfares and maintaining Del Ray’s pedestrian-friendly reputation. The developer of the yet-to-be constructed Institute for Defense Analyses office in Potomac Yard agreed in December to donate $30,000 from an existing contribution for traffic-calming measures in adjacent neighborhoods.  • See: Council OKs IDA Office at Potomac …

City Staff Discusses Bringing Carshare, Capital Bikeshare to Del Ray

Alexandria begins outreach process of expanding transportation programs.

Carshare and Capital Bikeshare coordinators with Alexandria met with the Del Ray Citizen Association’s Land Use Committee last week at Mount Vernon Recreation Center to begin the outreach process of bringing the programs to the neighborhood. Alexandria City Council approved the expansion of its eight-station Capital Bikeshare program in Old Town as part of its budget adoption last week. Planners are looking at adding stations in Del Ray and Carlyle, as well as potentially adding more in Old Town. Capital Bikeshare makes bicycles available for shared use mainly for short rides. The bikes are available at stations and members who pay for an annual or short-term membership fee can remove them from stations and return them to stations …

Bike stations at the Birchmere, the Potomac Yard shopping center/movie theater and Slaters Lane would be nice.   more ›

The Town of Potomac Still Exists!

Proving a long-extinct municipality is still honored by the U.S. Postal Service—with a little help from my friends.

For reasons I cannot fully articulate, the U.S. Postal Service still manages to carry some intrigue. The sending and receiving of letters with the help of a carrying service remains a bit mystical, even if I see postal workers nearly every day. It’s also nice to see your name written in someone else’s handwriting arrive at your doorstep every now and again—if only for the accompanying tug of nostalgia for a time when email didn’t exist and long-distance calls could run a decent charge from Ma Bell. While researching the Town of Potomac, Va., for a recent story, I stumbled upon a suggestion that the postal service still honors the municipality as an alternate address for Del Ray’s 22301 ZIP code. Potomac was an incorporated town from 1908 …

Wow! Potomac still exists? Maybe those of us actually living in Potomac should elect our own Town Council that wouldn't sell us out to developers piece by piece and have a civic association run by and for the citizens of Potomac instead of residents of Mount Ida and the Del ray Business Association. If we act fast, we might be able to save what is left of a once lovely little town before it is …   more ›

DRCA Committee Hosting Meeting Concerning Carshare and Bikeshare

Land Use Committee invites public to Thursday night meeting at Mount Vernon Recreation Center.

The Land-Use Committee of the Del Ray Citizens Association is reaching out to residents and business owners for feedback as Alexandria investigates potential on-street carsharing spaces and Capital Bikeshare stations on and around Mount Vernon Avenue. The committee is hosting an open meeting to discuss both projects at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9 at Mount Vernon Recreation Center. Alexandria Parking Planner Faye Dastgheib and Transportation Planner Carrie Sanders will give a presentation on both projects.   In April, Alexandria’s Traffic and Parking Board approved five on-street carsharing spaces in Old Town. A space located in the 100 block of Stewart Avenue remains under consideration. • See: City Approves 5 On-Street Carsharing Spaces in Old…

Del Ray Historical Preservation Plan in the Works

Plan aimed at preserving Art Deco buildings and creating a pattern book for home modifications.

Alexandria’s Department of Planning and Zoning is proposing the development of a Del Ray Historic Preservation Plan as part of its work for fiscal year 2014, according to the Del Ray Citizens Association newsletter. The plan is aimed at preserving the mid-20th century commercial Art Deco buildings on Leslie Avenue by creating a new National Register Historic District and potentially expanding the existing boundaries of the existing Town of Potomac Historic District to include Art Deco buildings on Mount Vernon Avenue. The Town of Potomac Historic District was established in September 1992, honoring the Town of Potomac that incorporated in 1908 when several subdivisions merged. The area was developed beginning in 1894 as the communities of …

I agree with you sp, but with a minor modification: The handful of folks who've posted with warning comments of a Pattern Book being a toehold into abridging their property rights, miss the point. They don't realize a Pattern Book does not regulate your (sic) 'property' - Alexandria already has those zoning regulations well in place. They mayn't realize that, if the structural modification they …   more ›

The Week's Top Story: Del Ray Walgreens Project Moving Forward

Del Ray Walgreens Project Ready to Move Forward

Mount Vernon Avenue drug store closer to reality after planners resist request from Alexandria officials to pursue locations elsewhere in the city.

Despite requests from Alexandria officials to take its business elsewhere in the city, Walgreens is poised to take over the retail strip at 1509-1517 Mount Vernon Ave. in Del Ray. • See: Walgreens in Del Ray: 'I Don't Think Anything is Going to Stop This' Gwen Wright of the city’s Planning Department told Patch city officials recently asked Pico Triple Net, a company that purchases and renovates commercial space Walgreens finds desirable, if it would consider looking elsewhere in the city, specifically in Potomac Yard or east of Braddock Road Metro Station. “We said we like the idea of a national retailer opening a location in the city, but we talked about other options [than Mount Vernon Avenue],” Wright said. “They said they will think …

Apparently the Walgreen's is going to be built, best to see if the residents of the area see if Walgreen's is willing to conform to the local architectural. I have seen other Walgreen's around the country as I have traveled and in some cases they have worked hard to bend in the neighborhood, but in other cases they have the same architectural theme and they do good landscaping.   more ›
