Krupicka Secures Seat to Represent 45th House District

Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka handily won over his two competitors, Republican Tim McGhee and Libertarian Justin Malkin.

Democrat Rob Krupicka won in a landslide Tuesday night in his quest to secure a House of Delegates seat representing the 45th District of Virginia. "[This election] is a wakeup call for all of us for the next two months that we are going to work tirelessly so the direction of this state and country keeps moving forward to make our country stronger," Krupicka said at his victory party at Fireflies in Del Ray. "You're not going to stop us for standing up for what we believe in as a community. That's standing up for education, equal pay, good jobs, giving everyone a seat at the table no matter their sexual orientation or race." Krupicka took 75.7 percent of the vote—about 6,384 total votes—in the unofficial count after polls closed at 7 p.m. …

Bye Bye Romney

11:17 am on Sunday, September 16, 2012

Sheldon Adelson, Romney's uber-billionaire casino owner and financial backer, pledged to give Romney $100 million -- or "whatever it takes" -- to defeat Obama. Do you know why??? As Bill Clinton reminded us, sometimes the answer is as simple as arithmetic. So let's do the math: According to a new report from the Center for American Progress Action Fund, Adelson will get $2 billion in tax savings …   more ›

Libertarian Malkin Makes Run at House of Delegates

Libertarian Justin Malkin is one of three candidates on the ballot in Tuesday's 45th District special election.

Justin Malkin’s platform for the 45th District seat in the House of Delegates is a simple one, one that he even says is a little corny. “I honestly believe in my message and that it will resound with voters, and that’s social tolerance and fiscal responsibility,” he said. The Libertarian candidate is on Tuesday’s special election ballot, where he will face Democrat Rob Krupicka and Republican Tim McGhee. How does his Libertarian Party philosophy mesh with a constituency that largely depends on the government for jobs and livelihood? Malkin says it’s an uphill battle, but he also believes the 45th District is not an outright void when it comes to libertarian thinking. “I think there are a lot people out there who will take a government job …

Perhaps what we in Alexandria need in our leadership is someone who isn't part of the "system". In other words, perhaps we need someone who is not a career politician. We could use a shake up at all levels of our government.   more ›

Malkin Enters Delegate Race

Libertarian candidate Justin Malkin will face Democrat Rob Krupicka and Republican Tim McGhee in Sept. 4 special election.

The special election to replace Del. David Englin as representative of the 45th District in the House of Delegates is now a three-way race. Libertarian Party candidate Justin Malkin filed election paperwork with Alexandria this week and will be on the ballot on Sept. 4. He will face Democratic nominee Rob Krupicka, an Alexandria City councilman and a member of the State Board of Education, and Republican Tim McGhee. Krupicka defeated Karen Gautney last week in a caucus to earn the Democratic nomination. McGhee, a web developer and former candidate for State Senate, was the lone Republican to gain candidacy. Absentee voting for the special election begins Friday at the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration and Elections, 132 N. Royal St…

Justin, hey, you're 'in it to win it', and I wish you the best of luck. At least you're very realistic in knowing that you're very much a long shot to beat Rob Krupicka, and yes, long shots have sometimes won, too. All the best to you on this and future campaigns!   more ›

Krupicka Defeats Gautney in Democratic Caucus

Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka claims 63 percent of the vote.

Rob Krupicka is the Democratic nominee for the 45th District House of Delegates seat.  The Alexandria City Councilman defeated Karen Gautney 1,540 to 891 after caucus voting ended Saturday at Cora Kelly Rec Center. “I couldn’t be here without the amazing group of friends I made when I entered public life in this city,” Krupicka said shortly after the results were announced. “It was great seeing all those friends come out despite the governor’s best effort to throw one past us.” Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the date of a Sept. 4 special election less than two weeks ago, causing both parties to scramble to nominate a candidate. Krupicka will face Republican nominee Tim McGhee. The seat opened when Del. David Englin announced his resignation …

Updated: McGhee Enters Race for Delegate

Thursday evening's GOP canvass is canceled after Tim McGhee emerges as the only Republican candidate.

Tim McGhee is the Republican candidate for the 45th House of Delegates seat, the GOP district chairman told Patch Thursday afternoon. Heath Wells said three candidates submitted candidacy paperwork, but two withdrew because of family or work conflicts. Since McGhee is the lone candidate, the Republican canvass scheduled for Thursday night is canceled. McGhee lost to Adam Ebbin in the 30th District state senate race last year. He claimed just over 35 percent of the vote. “Virginia has weathered the challenges of the recession better than most states, thanks to the leadership of Governor Bob McDonnell and others,” McGhee wrote in his statement of candidacy released Thursday. “Serious fiscal challenges lie ahead at all levels of the …

Ebbin Endorses Krupicka in 45th District Race

Ebbin defeated Krupicka in state senate primary last year.

Rob Krupicka picked up the endorsement of State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-30th) on Wednesday in the race to replace David Englin as state delegate from the 45th District. Krupicka, an Alexandria City councilman and a member of the State Board of Education, lost to Ebbin in a Democratic primary for state senate one year ago this month. “[Rob] has been a steadfast ally in the fight for true equality, a world-class education system, a cleaner environment, smart transportation solutions, and innovative policies that keep our economy strong,” Ebbin wrote in an email to supporters on Wednesday morning. The announcement came on the eve of a last-minute caucus to determine the Democratic nominee. Krupicka is running against fellow Alexandria resident …

Hi Isaac, I like to think that people are not corrupt by nature. However, I believe that people respond to incentives. I think that competition does a much better job of keeping the private sector "honest" than government ever can. The reason for this is because if a company is engaged in dishonest activities, the consumer will notice and take his business elsewhere. Especially in today's day and…   more ›

Democrats Organize Caucus to Choose Delegate Nominee

The 45th House District Nominating Committee convened on Thursday to organize a caucus to nominate a candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates.

Just days after Gov. Bob McDonnell called for a special Sept. 4 election to fill the soon-to-be empty 45th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, Democrats in Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax have laid the groundwork for a last-minute caucus to choose a nominee. The 45th District includes Alexandria, parts of southern Arlington County including Fairlington, and a portion of the Huntington-Belle Haven area of Fairfax County. The seat is being vacated by Del. David Englin, who recently announced his resignation effective Aug. 31. On Thursday evening, the nominating committee decided to offer two opportunities for registered voters to participate in the caucus. Craig Fifer, chairman of the 45th House District Nominating Committee…

Krupicka Officially Announces Candidacy for Englin's Seat

Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka says education is his top priority and promises to fight against "right-wing extremism."

Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka officially announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the 45th District House of Delegates seat on Tuesday. Krupicka said in statement that his top priority is education and that he will also work toward environmental and transportation solutions that create jobs and conserve natural resources. "As a graduate of the University of Virginia, and someone who has worked to increase the number of students ready to succeed in college, I will work to make sure our public higher education system is transparent, affordable and accessible for every resident of the Commonwealth,” said Krupicka, who is also a member of the State Board of Education. Last week, Del. David Englin (D) announced his …

If you don't like what you hear about your city's schools, I encourage any one who has time to go on these blogs to channel that time into volunteering time and talents and doing what you can do to contribute towards making your school system a better place. Updated: Englin Turns in Resignation, Endorses Gautney

Del. David Englin tells Gov. Bob McDonnell he hopes a special election will be held on Nov. 6.

Del. David Englin (D-45th) announced Thursday that he has submitted his resignation from the House of Delegates effective Aug. 31 and endorsed Karen Gautney to replace him. In April, Englin announced he would not seek re-election to focus on rebuilding his marriage and family. He admitted to being unfaithful to his wife. In his resignation notice to Gov. Bob McDonnell, Englin said he hoped a special election for his seat would be held during the Nov. 6 General Election “to ensure the best possible stewardship of taxpayer resources.” Englin endorsed Gautney, writing: "The people of the 45th District deserve a Delegate who is totally devoted to fighting for what's right and not distracted by future political ambitions. … Karen's diplomacy, …

Hank, you're right. Marian Van Landingham was a hard woman to replace, and as much as David Englin tried, he could never truly succeed her in stature. Marian is truly an Alexandrian institution, a woman whose likes we'll probably not see in local politics for quite some time.   more ›

Lander Wants to Seek Common Ground as Delegate

Arlington School Board member is one of two Democrats to announce they will seek Del. David Englin's seat.

James Lander believes he can go to Richmond and build bridges that will help Democrats in the House of Delegates advance their agenda and move this state forward. Lander, 42, has served in the U.S. Navy actively or as a reservist for 22 years. He's about halfway through his first two-year term on the Arlington School Board, his first public office. And he's a national program manager for Goodwill Industries International, doing workforce development for veterans who are transitioning back to civilian life. Lander is one of two Democrats who have announced their intentions to seek the seat in the House of Delegates that will be vacated by Del. David Englin, D-Alexandria. The other is Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka. Last week, …
