Metro officials say bus rapid transitway could move more people quicker, boost bus ridership and potentially reduce vehicle traffic.
The Crystal City-Potomac Yard transitway—the first network of bus-only lanes to be built in the Washington, D.C. region—will debut in spring 2014, according to a report from The Washington Post. Construction of the Alexandria portion of the Crystal City-Potomac Yard transitway along Route 1 will begin later this month, bringing plenty of changes to the corridor. The Bus Rapid Transitway in Alexandria will consist of exclusive bus lanes in the median of Route 1 between Potomac Avenue and E. Glebe Road. The transitway will eventually connect the Braddock Road and Pentagon City Metro stations and will be constructed in concert with Arlington County. The BRT will offer fast, reliable and safe bus service, project planners said at a community meeting in April. Jurisdictions strike deal on two-phase plan to bring streetcars to the Route 1 corridor.
Alexandria City Council and the Arlington County Board both moved Saturday to work in partnership to bring streetcars to the Route 1 corridor. The jurisdictions agreed that Arlington, in the first phase of the two-phase project, will begin planning for a Route 1 streetcar line in 2013 that will extend from Crystal City to its border with Alexandria in Potomac Yard. During this time, Alexandria will continue work to finalize the proposed new Potomac Yard Metro station. Alexandria will then begin the streetcar project’s second phase in 2014 by pursuing environmental and alternatives studies to assess the conversion of its portion of the Route 1 transitway from buses to streetcars. Governing bodies to consider proposal on Saturday.
Alexandria and Arlington County are nearing an agreement for a streetcar in the Route 1 corridor, according to ARLnow. Alexandria City Council and the Arlington County Board are both scheduled to vote on the agreement on Saturday at respective meetings. According to the proposal, Arlington would work to complete an environmental assessment for the streetcar by late 2013. Alexandria would work toward completing environmental and alternative studies required to secure federal funding for the conversion of its segement of the Crystal City-Potomac Yard BRT by early 2014. Alexandria City Council approved design elements of the city’s portion of the Crystal City-Potomac Yard transitway last week, putting construction of bus rapid transit lanes between Potomac Avenue and E. Glebe Road on track to begin in July. Council made provisions to monitor changes in vehicle traffic in the area and requested city staff begin the process of creating a parking district in areas of Del Ray close to the BRT stops. As reported in an April Patch story, the BRT will alter several Route 1 intersections. The traffic signal at Hume Avenue will be removed and the intersection will become right-in, right-out only. The creation of the Crystal City-Potomac Yard transitway will alter the layout of Route 1 to offer fast, reliable and safe bus service, project planners said at a community meeting Wednesday at Cora Kelly Recreation Center. The Bus Rapid Transitway in Alexandria will consist of exclusive bus lanes in the median of Route 1 between Potomac Avenue and E. Glebe Road. The purpose isn't to connect Braddock Road with Crystal City. It's to connect the points in-between. It's nearly a mile from US-1 and S Glebe (National Gateway, Harris Teeter area) to behind the Target - where the new Potomac Yard Metro stop will most likely be built.
