Arlandria apartment building provides transitional housing for homeless families and individuals.
HomeAid Northern Virginia and Pulte Homes celebrated the renovation of a 10-unit Community Lodgings apartment building in Arlandria on Wednesday. HomeAid and Pulte partnered to renovate the building in the 600 block of Notabene Drive—one of five apartment complexes owned and operated by Community Lodgings. The apartments serve as transitional housing for homeless families and individuals. ACBA collecting items for Community Lodgings at Tuesday event.
The Arlandria-Chirilagua Business Association is celebrating its one-year anniversary on Tuesday with an event benefitting Community Lodgings, a local nonprofit that helps homeless and low-income families. The event is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Four Mile Run Park Building, located at 4109 Mount Vernon Ave. The event will feature live music and food from local restaurants. Formed a year ago, the ACBA aims to promote the visability and prosperity of its membership and embrace the diversity of Arlandria. The girls mentoring group at Community Lodgings in Arlandria hosted its Fall Fest Fundraiser on Nov. 3 and raised more than $540 to support future activities and outings. Comprised of five young professionals and seven teenage mentees, the group created custom T-shirts, jewelry and baked goods to sell. The event, which was at the Fifer Family Learning Center located at 607 Notabene Dr., also included family activities, relay races and a haunted house. More than 50 people attended the event. The mentoring group is led by volunteer mentors Stephanie Hemmert, Lisa Rowen, Denise Boamah, Holly Mosurick and Chasity Hughes. The Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy has been awarded a three-year Personal Responsibility Education Program grant to help reduce teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
More teens in Alexandria will be learning about how to prevent pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections through a new federal grant to the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy (ACAP). ACAP was awarded a three-year Personal Responsibility Education Program federal grant to provide prevention programs that address teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. The grant totals $290,494 per year and was awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families. The grant will allow the Alexandria campaign to work with approximately 800 at-risk youths. HomeAid Northern Virginia and Pulte Homes kicked off a renovation project to assist Community Lodgings in Arlandria on Tuesday. HomeAid and Pulte are partnering to renovate one of Community Lodgings’ five apartment buildings, which serve as transitional housing for homeless families and individuals. Renovating the 10-unit building will cost roughly $860,000 and enable Community Lodgings to increase the number of people it serves annually. The Walmart Foundation presented a check for $30,000 to Community Lodgings’ programs for homeless and low-income children on Wednesday at the Fifer Family Learning Center in Arlandria. William Hunsucker, manager of the Walmart located at 7910 Richmond Hwy. just south of Alexandria, and other representatives from the Walmart Foundation’s Virginia State Giving Program presented the check to Community Lodgings Executive Director Bonnie Baxley, staff members and many of the children enrolled in programs at the learning center. Economic Opportunities Commission held its "All Hands on Deck" day Saturday.
The Alexandria Economic Opportunities Commission held its “All Hands on Deck” public service day on Saturday at the Community Lodgings facilities in Arlandria. Volunteers painted and cleaned the interior of Community Lodgings buildings and performed some exterior landscaping work as well. The nonprofit works to lift families from homelessness and instability to independence through temporary housing options and adult education programs. Volunteers from the international consulting firm installed a mini soccer field on Friday
Volunteers from Deloitte's office in Alexandria on Friday converted a 2,000-square-foot patch of dirt and grass into a professionally designed play area for homeless and low-income families. The international consulting firm chose Community Lodgings, an Arlandria-based nonprofit organization as the local charity beneficiary for the firm's IMPACT Day promoting employee volunteerism. Community Lodgings was founded in 1987 and provides housing and social services to more than 20 local families annually and works to lift them to self-sufficiency.
