National Candy Cane Day: A Christmas holiday symbol

Sunday is National Candy Cane Day, which seems fitting one day after Christmas. According to Fast Company, consumers spent $214 million in 2009 on candy canes alone, purchasing more then 2 billion of them.  I think this merits a good reason to honor this tasty red-and-white holiday treat.   The candy cane started as a stick of sugar around the mid-17th century.  Confectioners made these treats by pulling, cutting, twisting and bending sugar by hand into early forms of the sticks we know today.  The cane's distinctive hook shape was created to make it easier to hold and later hang on Christmas trees. This holiday custom spread first throughout Europe and then later to other parts of the world.  The stripes did not become part of the design …
