Voting Now Open for 'Heart of Del Ray' Award

Del Ray Business Association presents the award to business that best demonstrates commitment to customers and community.

Voting is now open for the “Heart of Del Ray” award, presented by the Del Ray Business Association. The award is given annually around Valentine's Day to the business that best demonstrates a warm and welcoming attitude to customers, shows generosity and commitment to the community and contributes to making Del Ray a great place to live, work and shop. Five businesses are nominated this year: Voting is open on the DRBA website until 5 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will be handed the award—a large cardboard heart—on Wednesday morning. Click here to vote. Last year, more than 500 people voted for the award, which was won by The Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray. Past winners include A Show of Hands and local realtors Jen Walker and Bobi Bomar.  …

Caboose Cafe Opens in Parker-Gray

Restaurant open just for breakfast and lunch, but dinner will be added at a later date.

The Caboose is open for business in Parker-Gray. Rhoda Worku opened a second location of her popular Del Ray cafe on Tuesday morning at 1125 Queen St. in the building that previously housed Cafe Nicole. The Cafe Nicole awning and sign remain for now. Worku said new Caboose signage would be installed soon. “We’re ready to serve the community here,” Worku said. “It seems to be a really nice neighborhood.” At the moment, the Caboose in Parker-Gray is open for just breakfast and lunch. The hours aren’t completely set, either, as Worku and staff sort our some of the details. At least one of the Nicole staff -- the woman who usually worked the counter -- is still there, now in a Caboose T-shirt. The original Caboose has had very little staff turnover in the last several years and Ms. Worku seems very nice, so I expect the Nicole staff will likely continue to be a fixture there, much like Sgt's old jukebox.   more ›

DRBA Seeking Halloween Costume Donations

Costumes for in-need children can be dropped off at Caboose Cafe and A Show of Hands.

With the Oct. 30 Del Ray Halloween Parade quickly approaching, the Del Ray Business Association is currently collecting new Halloween costumes for children who would otherwise celebrate the holiday without one. Orange bins for collection are currently in place at the Caboose Cafe and A Show of Hands for interested donors. Organizers say there is a particular need for larger-sized costumes. The Caboose Cafe, located at 2419 Mt. Vernon Avenue, is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A Show of Hands, located at 2301 Mt. Vernon Avenue, is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. The store is closed on Mondays. The costumes …

Thanks Drew for the great article and for getting the word out. We are also happy to accept gently used costumes and costumes that your kids have out grown. Last year we distributed over 200 costumes so with there being an even greater need this year, we are hoping to collect over 300 costumes.   more ›
