Driver Strikes Police Cruiser During Traffic Stop

Nineteen-year-old arrested for reckless driving following Sunday night incident.

A 19-year-old male was arrested around 7:10 p.m. Sunday after striking the front of a Metro Transit Police cruiser with his car during a traffic stop at Braddock Road Metro station. An MTPD officer on routine patrol at Braddock Road Metro station initiated the traffic stop after observing a 1993 Mercedes drive through a red signal on Braddock Road and then enter the station parking lot through a bus bay exit with a posted “Do Not Enter” sign. The vehicle stopped briefly and then drove in reverse, striking the front of the police cruiser. The driver, identified only as a 19-year-old male, was placed under arrest for reckless driving and transported to the Alexandria Adult Detention Center for processing. Smoldering Metro Track Tie Causes Delays

Alexandria Fire Department responds to track issue just north of Braddock Road Metro station.

Update — The Alexandria Fire Department extinguished the rail bed fires shortly before midnight. One engine remained on the scene until Metro arrived with water to saturate the area. — — — — The Alexandria Fire Department assisted the Metro Transit Police in cooling off a smoldering Metrorail track tie just north of Braddock Road Metro station on Friday night. A spokesperson with the Alexandria Fire Department told Patch two engines responded to the issue. Firefighters experienced trouble reaching the scene of the blaze because of the fence around the tracks. Metro was planning on sending a train through to pour some water on the smoldering tie, the spokesperson said. The fire appeared to be affecting the west side of the tracks. …

The delays started before 9:00 pm. I was on a yellow line train to Braddock and the conductor announced at least twice (maybe three times) that she had to leave -- as in exist -- the train to put out fires herself. Braddock Road Metro is No. 1 Station for Bike Usage

Bicycle-rack usage up 19 percent at the station from 2011.

Braddock Road Metro is the No. 1 station in the system for bike usage, according to data recently published by Metro’s Office of Long Range Planning. Usage of bicycle racks at the station is up 19 percent from the year prior thanks in part to the addition of new racks. Braddock Road Station has the greatest rack capacity in the whole system at 136 spaces. During Metro’s bicycle census period from May 1 to June 15, the station averaged 92 bikes parked—also No. 1 in the system. King Street Station has a rack capacity of 92. The census found that the station averaged 68 bikes parked during the counting period. System-wide bicycle parking usage is up 3 percent from 2011. Metro Access to Reagan National Airport to Close This Weekend

Airport and Crystal City Metro stations will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday through end of Sunday.

Metro will shut down access to Reagan National Airport this weekend due to track work on the Blue and Yellow lines. Both the airport and Crystal City stations will be closed beginning 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Trains will terminate at the Braddock Road and Pentagon City stations. Shuttle buses will operate between those two stations, making stops at the closed stations. Metro advises that riders traveling through the work zone allow an additional 30 minutes of travel time to their schedules. The repairs to Metro include tie renewal, insulator renewal and cable installation to improve cell phone coverage. Read more information from Metro here and here.
