The city is seeking public comment on renaming Braddock Field the Lenny Harris Field, in memory of the community activist.
The City of Alexandria seeks public comment on a proposal to rename Braddock Field at George Washington Middle School the Lenny Harris Field. The park is located at 1005 Mt. Vernon Ave. at the intersection of E. Braddock Road and Mount Vernon Avenue. Lenny (Lenwood) Harris founded Operation Hope, an Alexandria-based organization that sponsored programs for youth and teens, in addition to initiating and supporting many political activities and programs for community development. Harris also founded the One Love Festival, an annual festival initiated for the purpose of bringing people together in unity and love to foster positivity and self-empowerment. Mixed-use commercial complex is expected to be completed in December.
Capital One Bank is providing an $8 million loan to Yates Corner LLC to construct the Yates Corner project at the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and Braddock Road, the bank announced Wednesday. Construction of the mixed-use commercial complex is expected to be completed in December. So far, the complex is confirmed to feature a new 7-Eleven, office space for Yates Automotive and the new Yates Green Dry Cleaners. The redevelopment project is an assemblage between Jason Yates, who owns the nearby automotive repair shop, and the Southland Corporation, owners of 7-Eleven. Flooding in the area prompted a morning rush-hour closure.
Update 9:30 a.m. - Service has been restored in both directions. Update 9:21 a.m. - Trains are now single-tracking between Braddock Road and the Pentagon, and delays continue in both directions on the blue and yellow lines, according to Metro. ------------ Overnight flooding has prompted Metro to stop service between Reagan National Airport and Braddock Road. The Blue and Yellow lines are temporarily suspended due to flooding in the Potomac Yard area. Trains can't operate in the area because the water level is above the height of the top of the rail, according to a statement from the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority.
