Bombay Curry Company Readies New Location

After lengthy delay, Indian restaurant begins preparations to reopen on Mount Vernon Avenue.

After a lengthy delay, renovation work at Bombay Curry Company’s new Mount Vernon Avenue location is underway. “Demo started today. Contractor says 90 days should do it. Fingers (and toes) crossed,” reads a message posted Saturday on the Bombay Curry Company Facebook page. The announcement sparked a fair amount of delight from patrons who have missed the restaurant’s Indian cuisine for more than a year. “Let's have a parade!!!” Scoop Murphy wrote on the Del Ray Patch Facebook page. In December 2011, Bombay Curry Company closed its location in the retail strip at the Calvert apartments just before the building entered a massive two-year overhaul project. • For the quickest updates on Del Ray businesses, "like" Del Ray Patch on Facebook and …

Mt. Vernon Avenue Spot for Bombay Curry Company at Least 3 Months Away

Indian restaurant closed in December as Calvert building prepared for overhaul.

Bombay Curry Company owner Balraj Bhasin tells Patch that it will be another three months or so before he reopens his restaurant at its new location on Mt. Vernon Avenue. “The plans are almost worked out and should go to the City in the next couple of weeks, and [as] soon as we get the permits we should begin construction,” Bhasin wrote in an email. Bhasin said he has held regular meetings with an architect and contractor. His request to operate a restaurant at 2607 Mt. Vernon Avenue with a reduced number of required parking spaces received approval from City Council in February. At the time, Bhasin had hoped to open in June. That was only if it all went to plan. Space constraints and other structural matters have played a role in holding …

Bombay Curry Company's Move Receives Thumbs Up From Planning Commission

Owner hopes to reopen Indian restaurant on Mt. Vernon Avenue in June.

Bombay Curry Company’s application to reopen at 2607 Mt. Vernon Avenue received a thumbs up from the Alexandria Planning Commission Tuesday night at City Hall. The application, which requests to open a restaurant with a parking reduction, was on the commission’s consent agenda because no speakers signed up to discuss it.  The proposal is still subject to a City Council hearing on Feb. 25. Owner Balraj Bhasin attached more than 200 letters of support to his application, including notes from former city manager Vola Lawson, former councilman Lonnie Rich and many business owners in Del Ray. “In all my years on the planning commission, I have never seen so many letters attached to an application,” Planning Commissioner Mary Lyman said. Bhasin …

Calvert Renovation to Begin in January

Massive overhaul of apartment building expected to be completed in late 2013.

The massive renovation of the Calvert apartment building is scheduled to begin early next year and construction work is expected to be completed in late 2013. Attorney Duncan Blair, who represents complex owners UDR, Inc., briefed the Land Use Committee of the Del Ray Citizens Association on the project timeline Thursday night at Mount Vernon Recreation Center. “This will transfer a very unusual iconic building into a nice-looking iconic building connecting Del Ray with Arlandria,” Blair said. Plans call for major design updates to the building's facade and rooftop, replacement of the existing parking lot and retail strip with street-level shops and a five-story apartment building, as well as construction of an underground parking garage. …

"Company representatives said there will be about 40 days of extensive piledriving work to prepare for the construction of a new parking garage." We live in the Aspen apartment buildings 400ft away from their pile driver. 7am every morning, we're awoken with construction, which is loud enough... but then the pile driving starts at 9 and goes until 3pm! Bombay Curry Company Acquires New Spot

Owner seeking assistance from citizens to tackle permit process.

Balraj Bhasin, owner of Bombay Curry Company, has acquired the vacant property located at 2607 Mt. Vernon Avenue in hopes of moving his Indian restaurant a few blocks south. Bhasin revealed the acquisition in an email sent out to customers this week. Bombay Curry Company is closing its current location in the Calvert on Dec. 20 as the building prepares for a massive overhaul. In his email, Bhasin wrote that the expected period of redevelopment is two years. “Two years… in our opinion is too long for us to be away from our patrons and for them to be without good curry!” Bhasin wrote. Bhasin is going to approach Alexandria officials with a plan to allow for a small restaurant in the property at 2607 Mt. Vernon Avenue, which most recently …

Bombay Curry Company to Close in December

Owner hopes to move restaurant to new location in Del Ray.

Bombay Curry Company, the popular Indian restaurant located in the retail strip at the Calvert Apartments, will close its doors on Dec. 20. The retail strip will be demolished next year as the Calvert undergoes a massive renovation. Owner Balraj Bhasin, who opened the restaurant on Father’s Day in 1995, announced Monday at the Del Ray Business Association luncheon that he is currently looking at other properties in Del Ray. Bhasin mentioned he has eyes on the empty storefront at 2607 Mt. Vernon Avenue, which most recently housed Del Ray Shoe and Luggage Repair. That business closed in less than a year. Bhasin said he will work with the city to try to make that Mt. Vernon Avenue property compliant for use as a full-service restaurant. The …
