Brett, NL, You can't fix congestion by widening roads. Really, in a city with a lot of people waiting to fill any new roads with cars, you can't fix congestion at all, except by taxing it. But you can improve the quality of life for people by making transit work better. http://alextimes.com/2013/05/adding-more-roads-just-%E2%80%A8feeds-the-congestion-beast/   more ›

Arlington also added bike lanes, sidewalks (we have lots of streets without sidewalks) and heavily marketed bike/walk/transit options to apartments and businesses. Alexandria is barely doing any of these things. On Potomac Avenue, the bike lanes stop on the Arlington side of the border. I'm not saying Alexandria can't succeed, I'm just saying we can't succeed if we don't make a serious effort.   more ›
Metro officials say bus rapid transitway could move more people quicker, boost bus ridership and potentially reduce vehicle traffic.
The Crystal City-Potomac Yard transitway—the first network of bus-only lanes to be built in the Washington, D.C. region—will debut in spring 2014, according to a report from The Washington Post. The transitway will ultimately connect Braddock Road and Crystal City Metro stations, with a future extension to Pentagon City. Construction began in July. Alexandria officials initially suggested line would open at the end of 2013. • See: Route 1 Transitway Construction to Begin Soon “We see this as the poster child for what transit service should be,” Jack Requa, Metro’s bus chief, told the Post. “This will be the first time that the buses will own the street and be able to move freely without interruptions from cars and taxis.” The MetroBus 9S …

The purpose isn't to connect Braddock Road with Crystal City. It's to connect the points in-between. It's nearly a mile from US-1 and S Glebe (National Gateway, Harris Teeter area) to behind the Target - where the new Potomac Yard Metro stop will most likely be built. And from 27th Street to the Crystal City Metro at 18th Street is a similar distance. At one time, there was a study to build more …   more ›
New sod in the median of Route 1 was removed just as quickly as it was installed to make way for BRT construction.
A few weeks ago, the medians along Route 1 just east of Del Ray were fitted with new sod. Then, just as quickly, a large swath of the sod was removed, leaving a naked strip of dirt and many commuters and nearby residents confused as to what happened. The swift removal of the sod was not a mistake; Route 1 was expanded over the summer to make way for the construction of a bus rapid transitway and sod was temporarily placed in the former northbound lanes to control erosion and sediment. The sod was then removed to make way for construction of the BRT, which was approved by City Council in May. Rich Baier, director of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, says it was a decision between covering the median with …

I agree with Phillip- putting down sod for a week and then ripping it up was a complete waste of taxpayer dollars.   more ›

To GeorgiaP - I think we are in agreement. The only reason I raised the issue of home prices in Potomac Yard (FWIW others have raised this same issue) is that part of the rationale for the BRT in the first place is that it is "supposed" to ease the congestion resulting from all of the new high density PY development. There isn't much new development in Del Ray and it is much less dense (…   more ›
