Randee Hilton wins the Art on the Avenue Pie-Baking Contest for the second straight year.
Randee Hilton took top honors in the adult field of the Art on the Avenue Pie-Baking Contest for the second straight year Saturday, winning with her Bewitching Blueberry Sour Cream Pie. Hilton won in 2011 for her Radiant Raspberry Brown Butter Pie, leaving little doubt there’s a person in Alexandria who can do more with berries and crust. After the competition, slices of the 24 pies entered in the adult and kids competitions were sold for $3 a slice to raise money for Stop Child Abuse Now of Northern Virginia. Hilton donated her winnings back to SCAN. The event raised a total of $641 for the Alexandria-based nonprofit. Local Realtor Bobi Bomar, The Happy Tart baker Ben Snyder and Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne served as the judges for …
Saturday's Art on the Avenue festival drew close to 50,000 attendees, according to organizers.
An hour of dark clouds and a few sprinkles weren’t enough to slow Saturday’s Art on the Avenue festival, which bounced back this year with a crowd nearing 50,000. “It was an amazing day,” said Pat Miller, chair of Art on the Avenue. “I think it was pushing 50,000 again. Felt like it anyway.” A year ago, chilly temperatures and rain slowed things down at the volunteer-run, multicultural festival that celebrates diversity through the arts. Roughly 18,000 made the trek to Del Ray in 2011. Saturday’s 17th incarnation of the festival tested Mount Vernon Avenue’s capacity limits at times but also showcased the neighborhood’s ability to throw a party for everyone from tots to adults—and in style. Attendees enjoyed more than 330 exhibitors …

Arts festival once again includes a pie-baking contest to benefit Stop Child Abuse Now of Northern Virginia.
If you're confident in your pie-making abilities, Art on the Avenue—to be held rain or shine on Saturday—is your chance to see how your secret honey-nut pie recipe stacks up against that of your neighbor’s exquisite chess pie. For an eighth consecutive year, Del Ray’s signature event will include a pie-baking contest. The contest awards cash prizes in two divisions: youth (17 and under) and adult. The pies must be officially entered before noon on Saturday, and judging will begin promptly at 12:15 p.m. The pies will be on display next to the Avenue Store located on Mount Vernon Avenue between Del Ray and Oxford avenues. Competition raises $772 for Stop Child Abuse Now of Northern Virginia.
Reagan Feld woke up early Saturday morning while most of her family was still in bed and stepped into the kitchen to work her way through a new pecan pie recipe with a bit of help from her mother. The 9-year-old student at Maury Elementary School said she was “crazy nervous” upon entering her creation, titled “Reagan’s Awesome Pecan Pie,” into the youth field of the Art on the Avenue pie-baking competition. “I’ve made that type of flavor before, but not this recipe,” the fourth-grader said. When her name was called as the winner of the youth competition, Feld let out a yelp of delight. She had won first prize for the second straight year. Despite the soggy day, 36 pies were entered in the competition in two fields—31 pies in the adult …
